Upgrading to M7 woes

Postby hosadeeb » Jul 17th, '19, 10:29

Hi Dearest Mageia team,
I just upgraded from Mageia 6 to 7 using the urpmi method described in the wiki, but after the installation I found out that what I got is Cauldron instead of the regular installation, and I'm experiencing quite a few anomalies...

Now, my question is: how do I switch to the regular distro repositories?! (Mind you, I did try to remove all sources and re-add them from a particular mirror without the "cauldron" bit, to no avail...)

Many thanks in advance.

Code: Select all
urpmq --list-url
..........bird from paradise..........

This is the output, after my last attempt to manually re-add the sources from a particular mirror:

What makes you think you have Cauldron now?
What is the output of:
Code: Select all
cat /etc/mageia-release
..........bird from paradise..........

Well, oddly enough it's: Mageia release 7 (Official) for x86_64

But then, Grub says differently...

And add to that the fact that I'm having a lot of strange things happening: DBus not discovered by QjackCtl which ends up working all the same; Banshee crashing every single time; TexMacs emitting a slew of error messages with an empty window...

From your listing i see, you have test- and debug-repositories enabled, which could be source for unexpected behavior/errors.
Normally you don't need or use these. For more information towards software-management i point you at our wiki:

For a sane repo-list, i would advise:
Code: Select all
urpmi.removemedia -a
urpmi.addmedia --distrib --mirrorlist 'http://mirrors.mageia.org/api/mageia.7.$ARCH.list'

But this does not mean, that your systems' problems are solved.
For your active list now, shows up backport-repositories.

Maybe someone else can help you out.

I think your issue may be similar to the one in another thread; you could try following the instructions in this post

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12915&p=75662&hilit=mga8#p75627

to see which - if any - installed packages are from Cauldron and downgrade them

I tried to downgrade TexMacs, but I got the selfsame version, with all its errors...

I really don't know, but it's as if the Cauldron packages have been mixed with the Official ones... Because I can't really imagine the official release to be that unstable. I don't know...

I guess you are still using legacy GRUB, not GRUB2. The old bootloader theme got missed when the switch from cauldron to release was done (legacy GRUB is basically unmaintained these days), so the menu still says Cauldron. You can check you have no cauldron packages by running
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep mga8

If that doesn't print out any package names, you don't have any cauldron packages installed.

QA test the commonly used packages, but they can't test everything. And Mageia only has a small number of developers so a lot of the packages don't have an active maintainer. You may well be finding bugs that nobody else has found, or bugs that only occur with particular combinations of hardware and installed software. Best to open bug reports for each of your problems (after checking that they haven't a;ready been reported).

First, i'm so sorry for missing your answer till now...

Second, I didn't find any mga8 packages. And thanks for explaining why I have the old GRUB screen. I don't know how to switch to GRUB2....

Third, I tried to find my way to opening bug reports, but I failed to find them within the forums. Could you please guide me?!

Thanks a whole lot for having the patience to help me.

Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!
