[DONE]Upgrade from 6 to 7 couse black screen

Postby mackowiakp » Jul 3rd, '19, 09:59

I just upgraded M6 to M7 using on-line method over Internet, according to the way described in Mageia WIKI. After reboot (KDE, Plasma display) screen become black. One time it started normally (in rescue mode) but after next reboot only Mageia login screen is display and no action is taken after enter a password.
So I try to resolve the problem according to

https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_7_Errata
and
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi

Nothing help. Below listing of my graphic card. This is laptop equipped in in-processor GPU and NVIDIA as add-on:

Code: Select all
[root@piotr-l ~]# lspcidrake -v|grep Card
Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:0416 subv:1043 subd:185d) (rev: 06)
Card:NVIDIA GeForce 635 series and later: NVIDIA Corporation|GM107M [GeForce GTX 950M] [DISPLAY_3D] (vendor:10de device:139a subv:1043 subd:185d) (rev: a2)

X server is set to "Intel 810 and later" and it worked properly under M6. What I can I to do to back system to life? If any additional info needed, I will send it ASAP.
Be so kind to help

If you select IceWM Session instead of Plasma, does that get you to a working desktop?

No. It still hangs after entering password on M7 login screen. Does not matter Plasma or IceWM i choose.
But the system is alive itself. It is possible to login to ones over ssh for example.

If you can get in via ssh, there's three places I'd look for helpful error messages after an attempt to log in:
1. The .xsession-errors file in your home directory
2. /var/log/Xorg.0.log
3. As root, running 'journalctl -b'

In the Xorg.0.log file there's this error message at the end

(EE) Failed to open authorization file "/var/run/sddm/{a9fd7e86-375d-4277-a1af-b7e0fef66543}": No such file or directory

Not sure what it means, though. It's probably related to some changes in how sessions are managed, but I couldn't find much about it; some other people had a similar problem in the transition from KDM to SDDM, and here

https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1128891

there are a couple things but no definitive solution. Maybe you should open a bug report

So the only solution is restore M6 from ISO files I created before upgrade M6 to M7. And wait.....

For what its worth, I also cannot get a graphical desktop working with an NVIDIA card. I tried upgrading and doing all the tricks I've used in the past since Mageia all too often breaks NVIDIA graphics support. I even did an install from installation media with the same results. I have an NVIDIA 750Ti.

@makowiakp You could try switching to a different DM. That would show whether this is a SDDM problem or something else. Via ssh, you can run drakdm (it will run in text mode). xdm should already be installed and available for selection.

@kbulgrien, you should start a new thread for that. makowiakp can get to a login screen, so this is a different problem.

I restored from M7 to M6 back. According to

its a potential bug. Will wait....

After reboot (KDE, Plasma display) screen become black. One time it started normally (in rescue mode) but after next reboot only Mageia login screen is display and no action is taken after enter a password.

Once I had the same (?) problem. In my case I had to switch to a console (e.g., Atl+Ctrl+F2), login and remove all ".Xauthority*" files in my $HOME directory. After that login from the graphical login screen worked.

There is still another possibility. On one laptop I had to rename $HOME/.config and $HOME/.local. After that I could login again. OK, I had to reconfigure my desktop after that but at least I had a desktop again...

I think that I found the reason why screen is black. After deletion of $HOME/.config and $HOME/.local, screen work properly. But whe I try to change the resolution form "System settings" (not globally but only for particular session) to lower, screen became to black again. After next deletion of $HOME/.config and $HOME/.local dirs, screen is active again with default (maximum) resolution. Because of my eyes, I want to lower resolution. What file is respossible for keeping resolution parameters for session?

Below my graphics cards config:

Code: Select all
[root@piotr-l ~]# lspcidrake -v|grep Card
Card:Intel 810 and later: Intel Corporation|4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [DISPLAY_VGA] (vendor:8086 device:0416 subv:1043 subd:185d) (rev: 06)
rtsx_pci        : Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.|RTL8411B PCI Express Card Reader (vendor:10ec device:5287 subv:1043 subd:202f) (rev: 01)
Card:NVIDIA GeForce 635 series and later: NVIDIA Corporation|GM107M [GeForce GTX 950M] [DISPLAY_3D] (vendor:10de device:139a subv:1043 subd:185d) (rev: a2)

As I wrote, it is laptop with only one monitor output. So NVIDA is add-on.

If you need to lower the resolution because you want everything to look bigger, then you could try display scaling (I haven't tried it myself, I've read it's not perfect): System Settings -> Display and Monitor -> Display Configuration -> Scale Display. You might have to scale fonts and icons separately, in their respective sections of System Settings

Yes. It is not perfect solution especialy for 3 ty party apps not supported by Mageia. Example Dassault CAD very importand for me.

Yes, screen resolution can be a challenging topic. On my Intel/Nvidia-Laptop I have added
Code: Select all
Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
to the Nvidia screen section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code: Select all
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    Device "nvidia"
    Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration" "on"
EndSection

This helps a lot with many 3rd party programs. But KDE/Plasma has to be configured separately.

By the way, I'm not 100% sure, but the config file with the screen settings for Plasma should be arandomly-named file inside ~/.local/share/kscreen

I will try. But the still the problem exist. How to change resolution without black screen effect? I set globally (via MCC) resolution to lower but it does not effect for KDE session of course.

See above, the hint about kscreen. You should not use MCC to change the X server configuration, but leave it at the default and also at an plug&play monitor,
then use xrandr frontends like kscreen or xrandr directly to change resolution dynamically.

What's the output of
Code: Select all
kscreen-console
xrandr -q

Screen resolution set to default "Automatic" and moniter set to "Plug&Play" in MCC.
I want to lower default maximum resolution from 1920 x 1080 (maximum monitor resolution) to 1280x768.

UPDATE - 1

Command
Code: Select all
xrandr -s 1280x768_60

change the current session resolution, without black screen effect. But how make it permanent?

Update -2

I place this command in $HOME/.bashrc and it work. But from my point of view, such possibility should be available from "System settings", as in M^. And /etc/X11/xorg.conf file does not contain any definition for Nvidia. So - so far "DONE".

But it does offer that, under systemsettings > display and monitor > displays you can select resolutions available via xrandr. In case that doesn't work or offer all resolutions, there's usually some unnecessary modeline definition in xorg.conf.

I think that the problem could be that this laptop is equipped in "combo" graphic card Intel and NVIDIA. In ver M6 there was Nvidia driver in kernel. After upgrade to M7 it disappear. Looking to the desktop PC equipped only in Nvidia (without Intel) such packages are present:

Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep nvidia
nvidia340-doc-html-340.107-9.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-cuda-opencl-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
dkms-nvidia340-340.107-9.mga7.nonfree
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-nsight-10.1.168-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-utils-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-doc-html-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
dkms-nvidia-current-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree
x11-driver-video-nvidia340-340.107-9.mga7.nonfree
nvidia-current-devel-430.26-1.mga7.nonfree

Extremely important for me is presence of Nvidia-CUDA because it dramatically increase computing performance of 3D CAD system from Dassault Systemes (very important for me).
How do You think. Can I simply install above packages?
