system level gitconfig file is missing [SOLVED]

:?: Where is, or what should be in "/etc/gitconfig"? :?:

I am experienced on Linux, and Mageia. But very new to using GIT as a source control utility.

The manuals, google searchs, and commands like "git config --system --list" say I should have a file called "/etc/gitconfig".

My system has git, and is up to date. But the file "/etc/gitconfig" does not exist on my Mageia system. See the following:
Code: Select all
[hank@HIvyTower ~]$ uname -a
Linux HIvyTower 4.14.78-desktop-1.mga6 #1 SMP Sun Oct 21 20:31:12 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[hank@HIvyTower ~]$ git config --system --list
fatal: unable to read config file '/etc/gitconfig': No such file or directory
[hank@HIvyTower ~]$

/etc/gitconfig should contain any options you, as system administrator, think should be applied for all users of your system. If you don't want any system-wide configuration, you don't need that file.

Thank you.

To paraphrase your answer, there is not a default /etc/gitconfig file, and one is not released. The system administrator is empowered to not create the file, or to set some system level GIT configuration values for all users; as he deems desirable.
