Did you copy the iso file as an actual file onto the USB stick in a filesystem, or did you write the iso file with something like d or isodumper to the usb stick as a device?
Also, do you use grub legacy or grub2?

I use grub2. Furthemore I tried both the
Code: Select all
dd if=file.iso of=/dev/sdb
method and writting with isodumper but in both case it doesn't propose to boot from the usb stick

not sure that I understand your request.
do you want to add the USB stick to your grub2 menu?

if not, here are some other possibilities:

1/ bios is not set to boot from the USB stick.- change your bios boot order. press any of the following key depending on your computer : ESC. F1, F2, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12, DEL, immediately after power on / during POST.

1a/ you are trying to boot a MBR only .iso when your system is set to UEFI. you need to change one or the other (bios boot type) to suit.

2/ Iso not bootable (what is it? and where did you get it?) as a result of a poor download. download again.
if downloaded by a torrent client you can use the torrent client to check the .iso and correct errors.
it is also possible to do the same if you can locate a torrent seed for the .iso if you downloaded directly. this will save you data if you are on a limited plan.

3/ tired USB stick. try another one.
3a/ tired USB port, try another one
