(SOLVED) Xterm have different behavior

Postby saptech » Oct 21st, '18, 12:18

I created an .Xresources file to modify xterm emulator from white background with black text to black background with white text. When I run xterm from Plasma menu, it still show white bg/black fg, but if I run it from konsole, it show the black bg/white fg. I have logged out and reboot with no change. Also if I run xterm from krunner it opens with white bg and black fg.

Any idea why this happens?

Thanks.

Maybe the xterm from plasma menu specifies some default profile?

I was talking to someone on Plasma IRC channel and was informed to look at xterm.desktop. I saw these lines in /usr/share/applications/xterm.desktop.
Code: Select all
Exec=xterm -name Terminal
Icon=xterm-color
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
Categories=TerminalEmulator;System;Utility;

He mention running the line in the desktop file, which I see as, "Exec=xterm -name Terminal". I ran it in konsole and it showed xterm with the default white bg & black fg. I edit it and just left Exec=xterm hoping it would run the changes I want, black bg/white fg but it didn't work out.

I'm not sure what changes I would make to get the desired results. This is no big deal but I just can't figure out why the changes not working from Plasma menu.

IIRC the environment is different. Where krunner sources the .Xresources among other things, programs started from plasma menu do not seem to do that.
Should be possible to simply run an xterm both ways and compare the output from set and env to maybe get a hint if something is different in the shell environment.
Maybe you need to load .Xresources in a different way, check e.g.

I have this solved. I had to change the four lines in .Xresources from xterm to XTerm. That fixed it.
