i love mageia!
but there is one problem with it - it comes with an ancient kernel!

please make an iso with kernel 4.17 (better yet...4.18) !

Many thanks and keep up the good work!

PS: can someone please point me to a detailed tutorial how to update mageia kernel to 4.17/4.18 ?
Thanks alot!

Hi cosmin1981,

is there a particular reason you require the later kernel?

these are not LTS kernels, so unlikely to be available through Mageia repos.

see here for more info: https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html

If you want the latest, you may have to compile your own

Edit: thanks for the info (below) filip, I did not know this

If you really don't want an LTS or you need newer kernel in Mageia 6. We have a 4.18 and 4.17 based kernel currently in backports testing for those needing latest kernels. Just pick your flavour.

BUt other LTS-es - i.e. Linux Mint 19 Tara - make installing the new kernel 4.18, a breeze - just press UPDATE at the upate screen...and thats it!
Ofcourse, this update is colored in red while the standard ones are simple yellow .

all a user had to do, is simply tick the new kernel.
Please do the same here!

REASONS: i use amd ryzen 5 2400 G, raven bridge architecture, and Mageia doesnt run in higher resolutions.
The thing is, mageia is a desktop distribution, not a server one.
So it should be alot more up to date on the kernel.

PS: how do i update kernel in mageia? i havent been able to find a proper detailed tutorial ...i am not familiar with urpmi
than ks

as suggested by filip enable repos :
Code: Select all
core backports testing
non-free backports testing
tainted backports testing

this can be done from the Mageia Welcome link #3: Configure media sources and update system, or
from the Mageia Control Center: Configure media sources for install and update.

you can then as a root terminal run
Code: Select all
# urpmi --auto-update

this will ensure that the new media sources are checked as ok.
or you could just reboot if that is preferred.

then go to your Mageia Control Center => install and remove software.
make sure the 2 buttons to the left of the search window show "all" and enter 4.17 or 4.18 into the search window and then press enter.

Code: Select all
kernel-desktop-4.17.17-1.mga6
kernel-desktop-4.17.18-1.mga6
kernel-desktop-4.18.10-1.mga6
kernel-desktop-4.18.11-1.mga6

choose the kernel(s) you want and then click on the "apply" button.

after install you will need tio reboot and then choose your kernel from the grub menu

just a note to cosmin1981.

different distributions have a different approach to whats shiny and new and others for example, Centos/Redhat have an extremely cautious approach to latest and greatest.

its probably reasonable to state that Mageia is somewhere between latest for the sake of it verses dont change it if its not broke, and this makes for a stable

distribution that can be managed by a relatively small development team.

when my hardware was shiny brand new, the team very quickly produced the goods for me to get up and running with everything working.
