[SOLVED]VLC - no sound at all in fresh Mageia 5.1 install

My problem - I have - yet again - re-installed #5.1 from the downloaded DVD ISO (I had a week from hell and have had to do this several times, a lot of times due to self-inflicted errors). I checked VLC and I have no sound in playing videos or music through VLC, Dragonplayer or Xine for that matter.

I do have sound, I can quite happily play music via Clementine, but no sound through VLC.

Why is this??? I enabled all of the requisite repositories from when I had a similar problem a few years ago (because I didn't include the correct ones on install) and the good doktor5000 helped me out with that and pointed out the error of my ways so I make sure I include all of the required repositories (ie Tainted etc.).

Also as a side question regarding Virtualbox - which version do you install on Mageia??? (I have tried installing Fedora, 26, 25 and 23 but all get some sort of error when installing and don't install). On my perfectly good #5.0 system that I blasted to hell by upgrading, I thought I had saved my VB install files but I didn't :-( and can't remember which distribution I used to download as I hadn't downloaded it for ages as I hadn't used it for ages.

when playing sound under vlc, open pulse audio and see that vlc app is showing as providing sound.

then look at what output devices are setup, and if necessary change the default.

its possible ou have a situation where theres more than one device available, for example, analog audio, analog dulplex, hdmi audio, headphone output and vlc is going out the wrong one.

also vlc has some options re device in itself as well so if that does not get you what you want try out the audio plugin in vlc and see where that is pointing

Just go to MCC and install from there, choose the arch to suit your system.
install a virtual system of some discription.
after install, add "guest additions" (drop-down menu from the top bar), also add yourself to group "vboxuser", (so you can use usb peripherals) reboot and you should be good to go.

once you can launch Virtualbox, if you can find them, your .vdi files should just launch. if not post back any error message.

Thanks for the replies.

wintpe: don't know how to "openpulseaudio". The only pulseaudio I can find is "Pulseaudio Volume Control" located in the Sound & Video sub-entry of the application Launch Menu - is that the one???
And you were right and that's how I solved it! I discovered that when I was playing a video under VLC and checked pulseaudio, the audio stream was playing on "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)". I changed that to "Built-In Audio Analog Stereo" - and voila, sound under VLC!

Ken-Bergen: What is
task-codec-audio ?
Is that a command? I tried to execute it if it is but no joy.

Benmc: Helping me again I see. Thanks. Seeing that I haved fixed the sound problem with VLC with wintpe's help I'll close this and open a new problem about the problem I get with VB and post the details there.
