[SOLVED]VLC - no sound at all in fresh Mageia 5.1 install

My problem - I have - yet again - re-installed #5.1 from the downloaded DVD ISO (I had a week from hell and have had to do this several times, a lot of times due to self-inflicted errors). I checked VLC and I have no sound in playing videos or music through VLC, Dragonplayer or Xine for that matter.
I do have sound, I can quite happily play music via Clementine, but no sound through VLC.
Why is this??? I enabled all of the requisite repositories from when I had a similar problem a few years ago (because I didn't include the correct ones on install) and the good doktor5000 helped me out with that and pointed out the error of my ways so I make sure I include all of the required repositories (ie Tainted etc.).
Also as a side question regarding Virtualbox - which version do you install on Mageia??? (I have tried installing Fedora, 26, 25 and 23 but all get some sort of error when installing and don't install). On my perfectly good #5.0 system that I blasted to hell by upgrading, I thought I had saved my VB install files but I didn't
and can't remember which distribution I used to download as I hadn't downloaded it for ages as I hadn't used it for ages.
