I'm a great fan of Konqueror, as a file manager. I know it incorporated Dolphin, which I don't much like, but it was so fully featured. On Mga6rc Konqueror has been stripped of it's ability to start in File Manager mode, although it's still there. An extra key stroke away. But Konqueror has been gutted, too. At least as far as I've been able to work out. The side bar is gone (?) My side bar was for bookmarks, of which I had 26. Most monitor screens now are generous in width, so a sidebar was no encumbrance. True, I can have a bookmark bar, but it's under the top line. Can you imagine 26 bookmarks titles side by side? A line each in a sidebar doesn't come near to filling the space. The Herr Doktor suggested an alternative to Konqueror, which I'll have to try

Largely because the Konqueror of old has useful extensions (like the sidebar), whereas the 'improved' version does not. Or at least, I've not yet found them. I started a new thread, since my previous query did not compare new with old, and I thought I'd keep to the point.

I must say that the first major benefit I found in MGA6 was the ability to remove unused and redundant
apps from plasma 5 without ripping the heart out of the system, and Konqueror was the first to go, along with
a load of other unnecessary bloatware that still appears by default.

Dolphin does not look much when you first start it, but go into options and add missing menu bar, and configure it, and it becomes
your best friend.
its bookmarks also work quite well, although they are not obvious unless you play a bit.

Hi, Peter, I wish I could agree with you, but I can't. I find Konqueror the best thing since sliced bread, and that's with years of experience with File Managers of all types. Dolphin I find is a sad and deficient substitute. I've been unable to find these options of which you refer, and if Dolphin has any bookmarking facilities, I've been unable to find them. Sadly, unless I can import the old and feature rich Konqueror into Mga6, I'm going to give it a miss. I shall probably put it onto one of my other machines for the stuff new to Mageia. Like Posterazor, which fulfils a long felt want (See one of my old posts).
Oddly, only today, The Register has come up with an article covering exactly this ('OK, everyone. Stop typing, this software is DONE,' said no one ever), which puts it all into a nutshell. For most of my working life, I've been a draughtsman, in Production Engineering, designing the tools with which things were made. Then my current employer decided to go into CAD, leasing Prime Medusa from Prime Computers, which ran on a Prime super-mini. It was a revelation. It was absolutely perfect, and I took to it like a duck to water. Later, when the UK decided that making money from making things was too hard, I moved into CAD admin. It was then, that the Medusa software people decided to 'improve' the software. The old system used a physical tablet and a 'puck' to select drawing elements and commands, and a 'joystick' to move a cursor around the screen. On the new, it was all onscreen, with the menu's reducing the screen area devoted to the drawing quite considerably. As a draughtsman, used to working on anything up to A0, it was like working through a keyhole. The software people were keen to point out all the 'new' features, but, as a draughtsman, I pointed out that it was quicker to use the old conventions than the new 'features'. The list goes on and on. The Psion C was another case, in point. It was perfect from the first day. The 'improvements' were generally less useful than the original. As the article in The Register pointed out the changes were to keep the software people employed, rather than the users getting a better interface.

Dolphin has the obvious "places" panel since the start. Not sure where you're looking. You should maybe take a look at basic tutorials for dolphin before you dismiss it. E.g. https://userbase.kde.org/Dolphin/File_Management#Places

As you don't mention which features from konqueror you're missing in dolphin in particular, can't help much further on this.

It's not quite what is missing in Dolphine, it's that I don't find it quite as effective as Konqueror, in many of it's features and implementations. Why a system has to have two File Managers I cannot understand, but my overall impression is that someone in KDE wants to get rid of Konqueror, and in order to be able to do that Konqueror has to be broken. However, I suppose that that is something for KDE. I've raised a post in the KDE forum, on the subject, but whilst it has attracted a reasonable number of views, nobody, yet, has replied to it. I'll close this thread, now, but since I still wish to use Konqueror, I shall, as I pointed out in the posts above, be unable to move up to Mga6. Unless, of course I somehow manage to export the old Konqueror into 6. That should keep me amused for weeks.

prime medusa hey, I used to work for that company (89-93). I was one of the engineers on site looking after cadds4x/cadds 5 at a major car manufacturer.
Thats where i started using Unix, Sunos 3.5 to start with, and I loved Suntools, the window manager of the time.
Then came openlook, wow, what a difference, looks loke the future has come early. Then CDE, well not something i took to too quickly, hankered after openlook. Then we had a massive influx of windows being the dominant desktop, and I loved the windows 95 look but as the years went on and microsoft added more and more crap to there desktop, i started moving to Linux as a desktop (never left unix/linux, but it was all through terminal emulators running on windows). Back to Linux in 2004 as id had enough of where windows was taking me, KDE 3 fantastic...... KDE4 even better, initially until they started adding crap to it, and so i moved to lxqt.
So today we have plasma 5 and there are two things I dont like about it, the application start tree that launches across your desktop, and the task bar which is full of crap again like windows 7. In windows 7 i can add taskbar tweaker to get rid of that, and in kde4 mageia there was the classic taskbar.
So while my gripe is not the same as yours, its inline with it, just with the desktop itself rather than the apps.
I prefer to choose apps outside if the window manager, like Palemoon and Thunderbird, although I do like dolphin, it works for me.

But I do understand your point of view.
