i'm on mag5 with the new ff and now i can't read a japanese page, or any other alien code, since, presumably, i've updated it lately to the new ESR (45.2.0).
any tip?

Probably not an encoding issue, but you're missing the fonts for that. See e.g. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3559
