MCC not opening

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

MCC not opening

Postby mark9117 » Apr 30th, '16, 01:04

I've seen this before and I was always able to fix it either by restarting polkit or just rebooting. Those solutions aren't working any more.

What's happening is that I am opening MCC, either by the icon on the taskbar or by typing "mcc" in a konsole window (as root or as user), I'm challenged for a password as is appropriate, then the Control Center splash screen appears. It then simply disappears. Starting it in a konsole shows me this:

Code: Select all
#20 0x00007fb918c039fa in  () at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.20.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/Gtk2/WebKit/WebKit.so
#21 0x00007fb9253488cb in Perl_pp_entersub () at /usr/lib/perl5/5.20.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/CORE/libperl.so
#22 0x00007fb925341296 in Perl_runops_standard () at /usr/lib/perl5/5.20.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/CORE/libperl.so
#23 0x00007fb9252d319e in perl_run () at /usr/lib/perl5/5.20.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/CORE/libperl.so
#24 0x0000000000400ea9 in main ()
Detaching from program: /usr/bin/perl5.20.1, process 6692

And it just sits there - no control center gui appears. I also have to "reset" my konsole window for it to display input after that.

What is the best way to approach this? As I said, restarting polkit and rebooting haven't done the job. What's next?

Thank.

Mark

polkit restart or reboot doesn't help at all when your perl installation is broken. Also you don't mention which Mageia release that is.
Please show the output of
Code: Select all
urpmq --list-media active --list-url
rpm -qa|sort|grep -iE "drakconf|perl"
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!
Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Can you please post the output as root of
Code: Select all

As root, that command returns nothing.

I attempted to install perl-base and perl-Gtk2-webkit and they both show that they are installed.

I'm at work now but will have direct access tonight when I get home.

Thanks again. I appreciate it.

rpm -V perl-base perl-Gtk2-webkit
and it can be run as a regular user,

Tried to install it. No such package.

The Doktor's command was correct, my mistake.
Any output with the -V --verify switch indicates a problem.
You'll have to wait for the good Doktor to see where he's going with this.

Quick check before work:

Code: Select all

[root@spike madams]#

However:
Code: Select all
[root@spike madams]# urpmq perl-Gtk3-WebKit

Yes, the verification can be run as a regular user, but then rpm can obviously only verify the files it has read access to - so usually this needs to be run as root to check all files in a given package.
The verification checks the actual files against the checksums rpm stores internally, but also owner/group/permissions/modification time/size and so on and will output any deviation between what the rpm should contain vs. the actual files on disk.
For more details see http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/ch-rpm-verify.html and http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/s1-rpm-verify-output.html

@mark9117:
No output means all files should be OK, so those two packages shouldn't be the cause.

For the other output you posted, urpmq will only check the name given against the repos. If you only call urpmi with a package name, then it will simply tell you it's already installed.
To reinstall any given package which is already installed, use
Code: Select all
urpmi --replacepkgs --replacefiles packagename

You could try that on the two mentioned package, and then please post the full output when running drakconf after an

Replaced perl-base:

Code: Select all
[root@spike madams]# urpmi --replacepkgs --replacefiles perl-base

    $MIRRORLIST: media/core/updates/perl-base-5.20.1-8.2.mga5.x86_64.rpm
installing perl-base-5.20.1-8.2.mga5.x86_64.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms
Preparing...                     ########################################################################################################
      1/1: perl-base             ########################################################################################################

Did not resolve.

Code: Select all
[root@spike madams]# urpmi --replacepkgs --replacefiles perl-Gtk2-WebKit

    $MIRRORLIST: media/core/release/perl-Gtk2-WebKit-0.90.0-11.mga5.x86_64.rpm
installing perl-Gtk2-WebKit-0.90.0-11.mga5.x86_64.rpm from /var/cache/urpmi/rpms
Preparing...                     ########################################################################################################
      1/1: perl-Gtk2-WebKit      ########################################################################################################

Regrettably, this did not resolve the issue either. Calling mcc as root seems to produce the same output as before:

I'm still stumped, but that should go without saying. :)

Do you maybe have pipelight installed`?

I seem to be having a very similar problem, starting some time not long (a few days?) before 30th April.

mcc fails to start if invoked via the KDE menu. If invoked as a non-root user on command line from Konsole, it just sits there doing nothing until I hit CtrlC. If invoked from a non-GUI sessions (again non-root user), I get prompted for the root password, after which I am told

Code: Select all
polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

If I invoke it as root from Konsole, all is well. Ditto for root from a non-GUI session -- getting the non-GUI version, of course.

And no, pipelight not installed.

Please start a separate thread for your issue, definitely not related to this, more of a polkit problem.

Nope. Pipelight is not installed.

Code: Select all
# rpm -V pipelight
package pipelight is not installed

Sorry, so far got no further clues. Best report that as a bug, after searching if it hasn't been reported yet already: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly
