Basically you could simply turn the fan quickly to maximum power, by setting a higher fan speed in /proc/acpi/ibm/fan after loading the kernel module thinkpad_acpi if it's not yet loaded, as root via
Code: Select all
modprobe thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1

Apart from that, this software solution is definitely not a replacement for actually cleaning the fan and cooler physically with a brush, when the laptop is open.
You could also get basically the same effect by simply blowing quickly and powerfully into the fan exhaust openings on the chassis, usually on the left side and at the back.

I agree with Doktor, there's no substitute for physically cleaning the fan. I have a couple of motherboards (Asus?) that I recall have a fan clean function which simply spins the fan in reverse briefly. I'd rather clean it properly, I should probably do that now actually :)
