How to switch back to GUI after using concurrent CLI session

I'm in Gnome and use ctrl+alt+f1 to go to a concurrent command line session, but ctrl+alt+f7 or f8 does not return me to my graphical session. Whats up? BTW, I do get about 5-10 characters of garbage after the login prompt when switching to session f1, second time I try to login (in CLI) it works. I have to reboot to get a GUI back.

The graphical session is running by default on F8. Works here. What do you see when you switch back with Ctrl+Alt+F8 ?

What I was getting was a black screen. I just did some updates and changed the graphics card from the auto-selected radeon to radeonHD, and a new ati driver auto-installed. All SEEMS to work OK, but I can't test it much today. Graphic session appears on F7 now, with just a blinking "-" in the upper left of a black screen on F8. 3D for tuxracer and google earth works MUCH better now.
