DVD Movie will play but won't mount

This forum is dedicated to basic help and support :

Ask here your questions about basic installation and usage of Mageia. For example you may post here all your questions about getting Mageia isos and installing it, configuring your printer, using your word processor etc.

Try to ask your questions in the right sub-forum with as much details as you can gather. the more precise the question will be, the more likely you are to get a useful answer

DVD Movie will play but won't mount

Postby thx8008 » Apr 1st, '16, 17:25

Mageia 5, External DVD R/W+- usb connect.

I am converting my DVD Movie collection for use with Kodi on a different system.
My problem is that some DVD movies will play and mount showing in the left pane of Nautilus and some won't.
The ratio is about 10 to 1.
The bulk will display "Do you want to open with" AND will mount as a filesystem / drive.
The remainder will only show "Do you want to open with", with NO mount.
I have libdvdcss installed.

I have ripped down all the LotR, The Hobbit etc with no problem.
When I got to a couple of Dr Who's, all I got was "Do you want to open with" NO mount as a filesystem / drive.

Any ideas??

Thanks in advance...
Frankm

Are the Dr Who episodes commercial DVDs or did you record them from the television?

I get the same behavior with shows I record. They will play but will not mount.

More information...............
DVD's in question (still 1 in 10) will "mount" as a drive in windows 7 but won't in Mageia.
Handbrake will see the video_ts directory as will makeMKV in Windows 7.

Can you please post the output as regular user of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep dvd|grep -E "css|nav|read"

Hmmm, looks just fine. FWIW I cannot reproduce, after inserting a commercial video DVD, it mounts automatically under KDE and regular folder structure is accessible, and it can be played normally.

When I ran journalctl -af before inserting the DVD, this is what I saw in the logs:

Code: Select all
Apr 23 14:55:18 Mageia5 kernel: UDF-fs: INFO Mounting volume 'RISSE_IM_BETON', timestamp 2015/01/29 12:11 (1078)
Apr 23 14:55:18 Mageia5 udisksd[3869]: Mounted /dev/sr0 at /run/media/doktor5000/RISSE_IM_BETON on behalf of uid 1000

The one that I am focusing on now is "Men in Black 3". This looks like a good test case.

The first Mageia 5 machine I noticed this on was a network with external DVD.
I just built a new tower gaming system with an internal DVD, this also exhibits the same symptoms of not being able to read the DVD contents as a filesystem.
I also cannot play the movie in Mageia, but it will ask me if I want to open it with VLC, Dragon etc. But just won't play.
I'm starting to think it's an encryption thing. But I can do this in Windows 7 with Handbrake and makeMKV.

Thanks for the help, I'm not sure where to go with this.

I'm starting to think it's an encryption thing.

So if your box recognises it somehow as dvd, can you do the same thing as I did? As root run journalctl -af in a terminal, leave that running and then insert the DVD, and copy&paste newly added lines after insertion here.

And for vlc, with the dvd already inserted, can you run vlc from a terminal and then select file > media and dvd, and then copy&paste all terminal output from vlc here?

For the encryption part, do you have any video dvd you created yourself or created by others, meaning not a commercial dvd?

Additionally you could try to compile this small program, and use the verbose output to read from the DVD to see whether it's an issue with the CSS "encryption":
https://github.com/xrgtn/dvdread
That page also provides usage examples and some gotchas like wrong region code of the drive.

This seems to be the issue, indicating that dvdcss is either not installed properly or not working:

Do you use a 32bit or 64bit installation? Best show the output of
Code: Select all
uname -m
arch

Here's the output...

Code: Select all
[root@singularity ~]#     uname -m
x86_64
[root@singularity ~]#     arch
x86_64

And .. thank you for your help!

Well, you only installed the 32bit version of libdvdcss2 but you need lib64dvdcss2 for your installation. So as root
Code: Select all
urpme libdvdcss2
urpmi lib64dvdcss2

to uninstall the 32bit version and install the right one.

It looks like the 64bit version was installed.
Code: Select all
[root@singularity ~]# urpme libdvdcss2
unknown package: libdvdcss2
[root@singularity ~]# urpmi lib64dvdcss2
Package lib64dvdcss2-1.3.0-3.mga5.tainted.x86_64 is already installed
Marking lib64dvdcss2 as manually installed, it won't be auto-orphaned
writing /var/lib/rpm/installed-through-deps.list
[root@singularity ~]#

Ok, weird thing. I started poking around. K3B can see the disk DVD (as videoDVD) contents. Dolphin, Nautilus can't see the mount or FS.
So I used the "OPEN" function in K3B to enumerate the disk contents.
Then copy the VIDEO_TS directory and contents to a local disk and was able t see it with Handbrake (and obviously anything else)
From there I ripped the DVD to matroska mkv.

Fore reference, it was clearly not installed in your previous output ...

Ok, but in any case the DVD still will not show up as a filesystem.

Do you have an entry in /etc/fstab for your DVD drive?
