Upgrading from Mandriva 2010.2

Postby Will94 » Sep 6th, '11, 18:55

I have a Mandriva 2010.2 machine running GNOME that I am trying to upgrade to Mageia 1. If I boot to the Mageia DVD, the installer correctly detects the Mandriva setup. When it gets ready to upgrade packages, however, it returns the error "output in file /mnt/etc/hosts failed: Permission denied."

I've also tried to upgrade using a command line as shown in this document.
http://www.mageia.org/en/1/migrate/

The upgrade apparently went okay, but I lost my GUI after rebooting. I went back to the command line and entered 'urpmi task-gnome' which installed 80 something packages. I rebooted again, but still didn't have GNOME. I finally resorted to trying to run gdm from the command line which, needless to say, didn't work.

This is a virtual server running under Oracle VirtualBox, and I run a small BBS off of it. I didn't want to be without a GUI, and I didn't want anyone to post messages that would be lost from a restoration, so I gave up than and there, restored my backup, and am back on Mandriva 2010.2.

Does anyone have advice on how to make one or both of these methods work?

Thank you!
