"extreme" software updates

Postby boombaby » Dec 15th, '15, 11:29

Hello...

In Mageia-5, I just used "Software Management" to "browse" through some interesting available packages.

I clicked on "dependencies" to view what might be required; I clicked on "files" to see what was listed; I clicked on "details" to see more info; and so on.

Eventually I decided to download a package (a game) and "ticked" the check-box (as usual), then clicked "Apply". The usual notification displayed the package list (incl. dependencies) that was going to be applied. However, it included many (or likely, all) of the packages and files that I had browsed.

In other words, as well as the package I had selected it was about to download tonnes of MBs of unwanted, NON-SELECTED files.

Anyone seen this kind of effect before?

Are you sure they were un-selected? While you were viewing details of the files you could have accidently selected them. I have done that before.

I think I have seen that one before, something similar might happen under some circumstances. There was also some older forum thread about this, will check.

Hello, Germ...

No. From memory I MIGHT have selected one or two, initially (then de-selected). For the rest, I only looked at various details about the package(s). [Little busy at moment; will try again a bit later. Will post.]

DUE TO LINUX USUALLY USING LOWERCASE TEXT, I HAVE (UNUSUALLY) WRITTEN
THIS IN UPPERCASE (WITH LINUX STUFF SHOWING IN LOWERCASE). LOOKS HORRIBLE!
(MAKE SENSE?)

OPEN Control Centre > Software Management. IN VARIOUS CAT-EGORIES DO THE FOLLOWING...

CAT DOCUMENTATION > mageia-doc-installer-en (NO OTHER CLICKS)

CAT EDITORS > wxhexeditor > CLICK SWIVEL "New dependencies"

CAT EDUCATIONAL > tkgate > "Details" SWIVEL >> CHECK TO DOWNLOAD >> UNCHECK

CAT FILE TOOLS > freefilesync v6.2 (rel 4.mga5) > CLICK SWIVEL "New dependencies"

IMMEDIATELY CLICKED ON PREVIOUS ENTRY, ie...
> freefilesync v6.2 (rel 4.2mga5)

NOTE WELL, A MESSAGEBOX POPPED UP, WHICH SAID "Downloading..." (TOO QUICK TO SEE WHAT), THEN DISAPPEARED.

SAME CAT, ie...
CAT FILE TOOLS > qcomicbook > EACH SWIVEL, ie... "New dep.", "Changelog", "Files", "Details"
(IN REVERSE ORDER, ELSE THEY EXPAND OFF BOTTOM OF SCREEN), THEN...
>> CHECK TO DOWNLOAD (INFOBOX NOTIFIES OF EXTRA DEPENDENCIES ??) >> UNCHECK

CAT GAMES > CARDS > PySolFC
NOTE WELL...
IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIES OF DEPENDENCIES (AND 56 MB OF ADDITIONAL SPACE)...
...BUT I HAVEN'T CHECKED ANYTHING TO DOWNLOAD ???
(IN FACT, IN THE BOTTOM PANEL THE qcomicbook SOFTWARE DETAILS ARE STILL SHOWING)

SO HERE I Cancel THE MESSAGEBOX.

CAT OFFICE > UTILITIES > labyrinth >> CHECK, TO DOWNLOAD
(NORMAL INFOBOX NOTIFIES OF DEPENDENCIES)

CLICK OK

CLICK Apply BUTTON (AT BOTTOM OF SCREEN)
[IN OTHER WORDS I HAVE NOW CHOSEN TO DOWNLOAD labyrinth (ONLY)]

NOTE WELL, THE NEXT ADVISORY POPUP BOX.........

The following 7 packages are going to be installed:

- freefilesync-6.2-4.mga5.i586
- gnome-python-gconf-2.28.1-10.mga5.i586
- labyrinth-0.6-9.mga5.noarch
- libboost_thread1.55.0-1.55.0-8.mga5.i586
- libpoppler-qt4_4-0.26.5-2.mga5.i586
- p7zip-9.20.1-6.1.mga5.i586
- wxhexeditor-0.22-5.mga5.i586

13MB of additional disk space will be used.

4MB of packages will be retrieved.

Is it ok to continue?

WOA!! I CLICK "NO" (AND UNCHECK labyrinth, AND QUIT)

OK?

Yes it looks horrible, and it would be better to describe it in a more clear way. E.g. for PySolFC I cannot reproduce, it will only show the dialog about further required packages if you select it for installation.

Anyways the bug that I referred to is this one: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5770
But for your example, is it really that disturbing to install 7 packages, downloading 4MB? Feel free to add yourself in CC for the bugreport to see when the status changes.

Hello, Doktor5000...

Thanks for the feedback.

Perhaps you're right. Maybe I wasn't clear enough?

My previous post was a "sequence". It was ALL a sequence of steps as if going through and reviewing, selecting (and/or de-selecting) packages to download. (And it was all randomly chosen.) So the Pysol wasn't a ONE-off "thing" - if that's what you tried to do.

So, everything I wrote was (essentially) as it happened for me. If you try something like the sequence let me know if you get something the same.

I will review that "bug", and see what it means. Thanks.
