forgive my newbie question: I recently installed Mageia5 for the first time converting from Linux Mint 17.* and wanted to upgrade the kernel to the latest version. Couldn't find any info via Google on the commands used in Mageia5 to perform this. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks in advance.

Which latest version do you refer to in particular? Simply install your usual updates and you will also receive kernel updates.

Kernel 4.2.2 is the latest according to kernel.org. I've done the updates and it still reports the following:

Linux version 3.19.8-desktop-3.mga5

3.19.8 is the most recent kernel available in the mageia repositories. There is always going to be a gap between what kernel.org has and what is in the repositories.

I am unfamiliar with any kernel modifications as used by Mint, as Mint may use the "vanilla" kernel.

In Mageia there are some changes made to the kernel that are specific to Mageia.
As a result, the kernel is then tested by the Q&A team to check for any issues that may have been introduced.
Once tested ok by Q&A the new kernels are released via the automatic update mechanism.
You will receive a notification that an update is available.

Currently kernel 4.1.8 is in testing.
Be aware that some kernels in the past have not been passed by Q&A and were not released.
On this machine current available kernels are 3.12., 3.14., 3.19. and it has received all available updates.

I understand that Cauldron may be running kernel 4.2. but it hasn't been though the Q&A procedure, so use at own risk if you wish.

There probably will be an update for the X driver soon, see the relevant comment: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16655#c94

Thanks, doctor 5000! I switched to uxa now, an no problems. And I will wait an update.

Can someone please have a look at the commands listed below and maybe know/explain why I'm getting the errors shown within?? This is a fresh Mageia5 install on an HP 15.6" laptop that has a Intel Pentium(R) M 1.73Mhz processor, 1GB RAM, Intel 915GM x-86/MMX/SSE2 graphics, and 100GB hard drive. So other than the repositories that deniewicz provided above is there any other items that I should be aware of?? Are those repositories part of Mageia5 and I just need to select them or do I need to add them?? I've never used Mageia5 before and with other distros I never had any issues as far as the repositories are concerned. Appreciate your assistance!!

Usually when you first set up the repo's, the mirrorlist will pick the nearest mirror to you based on your IP address.
If that mirror is slow to update for whatever reason, your own system will only update once the update applet queries that mirror and a "update available" reply is given.

If you want to connect to a different mirror for your repo source, go to Mageia Control Centre, under the first tab. configure media sources for install and update
clicking on this will bring up your current list of available install / update media.
Mostly you will have, for i586 setup with, a tick beside each of:

non-free release
non-free updates and

maybe tainted release
maybe tainted updates

and some others if in an x86 set up.
to add a specific media mirror, click on " file " -top left of window, then " add a specific mirror " and a list of available mirrors will be presented in country order.

once you have made a choice and clicked " ok "- bottom right of window, the new mirror and repo's will be added.
be sure to have only 1 set of the above media enabled [ticked], otherwise there may be conflicts during updates as different mirrors may have different versions of packages, depending of the mirrors own update cycle.

Followed your instructions and I get the following error message:

looks like you have are having a problem with your "rsync://mageia.jameswhitby.net/mageia/distrib/5/i586/media/...." media.
Did you add these media specifically?
Can you disable all your repo media and then add new repo media. [ just untick them ]

Those repos were setup during the initial installation....I'll try disabling them and see what happens....but, also, during my fiddling around last night with your suggestions the system did actually decide to do an update to the kernel which is now:

along with some other software....problem I'm having now is I can't get the audio to work no matter what I try....I've installed PCM and Alsa controls but nothing....when I do the speaker sound test through my headphones they work but once I disconnect them nothing....this is what I get from these commands:

And third, please stick to one topic. You should get your repos fixed. No matter if they have been setup during initial installation or not, if they are not working currently they need to be fixed.

Best do the following: Remove all your repositories, and add a complete set of new ones, but don't use mirrorlist automatism. Check https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_man ... dia_source

You can also do it using commandline, as an example I'm using ftp.snt.utwente.nl as mirror. Feel free to use another one that's near you and up-to-date according to http://mirrors.mageia.org/status
