Flash, Freshflash, PepperFlash

OK - been trying to read through all the texts, posts, suggestions, etc., on how to get a flash player to work.

My OS is Mageia 5 with all the latest patches

I am able to watch most videos on YouTube using Firefox 31,7,0 and switching between the "Flash Player" and "HTML 5 Player" options. My biggest problem is with Hulu. I don't do cable TV and rely on services such as Hulu & Netflix for TV & Movies.

When I try to use Hulu, it says I need to upgrade my Flash Player to a newer version. So I downloaded and installed the flash plugin 11.2.202.508. No luck.

I installed Chromium, as some posts suggested it had a more reliable player. No luck.

I installed freshplayer from the media. No luck (I get errors saying that it cannot find the "libpepflashplayer.so" in any of the normal dirrectories. I did a search and could not find it either).

I uninstalled the browsers, and flash players, and tried again. Still no luck.

Any suggestions?

What do you miss from the MAQeia for flash player plugin ?
If you need the newer flash player, you should install chrome - NOT chromium.
And freshplayer is only a plugin for firefox so firefox can use the new flash player plugin that comes with chrome (that plugin is called pepperflash).

You'll probably have no luck with the newer flash plugin alone either. I just tried with hulu, and e.g. trailers start to play,
and after a short time they will display an error that the browser cannot display DRM-protected content.
DRM is not really supported on linux, as that requires an older flash player and hal - and hal does not exist anymore for Mageia, it has long been dropped.

I just went around in circles with hulu over this about a month ago.
In my case firefox could use flash, as long as I don't mind repetitively telling firefox to allow the "outdated" flash to run. But I had a free month of hulu's showtime package, and the playback failed when, I'd select the "live" showtime (east or west) option.

So I tried to access it with chromium, and/or on one of my installed Linux I have Chrom instead, No Go. One of Hulu's tech help people said that if I was going to use Google Chrom, I needed to disable pepperflash... ?!?

BTW I'm curious how the OP accesses netflix with Linux?

I am able to use Netflix with Mageia 5 and Chrome. There is a post (somewhere) on this forum discussing this. Linux support for Netflix is a fairly recent development.

Link ?

My daughter is wanting to use netflix. Tried on MGA4 and gave up. Done a fresh install of MG5 yesterday so might give it another go.

Why they cant just do HTML5 like you youtube and what not god only knows.....

kinda ironic as I bet their backend is mostly *nix too.

That somewhere and the link is two/three posts above yours. Sometimes I wonder why I add that information into posts when people do not seem to read them :|

Seen that.Thought their was a native way now! Dont wish to use wine hacks personally. I could have sworn that they stated they had moved to HTML5 . Guess I was wrong .

Netflix is working for me natively with latest chrome and Mageia 5.

To my original question - did I miss an answer somewhere? I tried installing Google Chrome (not Chromium). I went to the Hulu Site. I logged in. I tried to watch content - same error.

As a matter of fact, Hulu says that the Browser is incompatible and that I should use Firefox....

Flash, Freshflash, PepperFlash - SOLVED

OK - sort of found a solution. When I deleted the ./adobe/Flash_Player directory and re-started Firefox, it worked.

Netflix works in Chrome, Hulu in Firefox. They won't work (for whatever reason) in the other browser.

I can partially verify. Here Netflix works in Chrome but not Firefox.

Netflix works in Mageia 4 and latest Chrome install (64 bit), just tested it. I wish Hulu could be easily fixed.
