Is there a problem with Wireshark on Mageia 5? [SOLVED]

Postby DiBosco » Jul 20th, '15, 19:20

Folks,

Has anyone else used Wireshark on Mageia 5?

The interface looks completely different and it's not possible to set filters. For example, if you try to select the filters from Capture | Capture Filters it does nothing. No dialogue box or anything.

I've added a picture of what it looks like on my machine when it starts up. Does everyone else have this? Can anyone set filters?

BTW, you need to follow this:

To run as user. At least I did! I'm pretty sure I only had to add myself to the Wireshark group previously.

Ta. :)

I don't use it much so am no expert. Yes, the interface is very different. I found some information at usr/share/wireshark/wireshark-filter.html via the help button on the menu. Apparently after the capture you apply the filter (such as tcp.stream eq 0) via the entry field in the "display filter toolbar" at the top of the page below the icons. Hope this helps.

You should report that as a bug, after searching if it hasn't been reported yet already: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly
For completeness's sake and also to allow others to follow up on that bug report, please also post the link to it here in the thread, thanks.

im realy confused there appear to be two distinct versions of wireshark, 3.x with the full widget based gui, and this thing 1.12.5 with some light weight web like gui.

I know which one I want

Somewhere (I think on one of the Mageia mailing lists) I saw a discussion about the fact that the new QT version of the wireshark GUI is incomplete and a suggestion that we should revert to using the GTK version until a later release of wireshark. Sorry, I can't find a link - searching the Mageia mailing lists never seems to work for me. :(

Maybe this one? https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16450
A fix containing the GTK frontend has been already pushed as update: http://advisories.mageia.org/MGAA-2015-0076.html

That's it! I hadn't realised that a fix had already been pushed. So users who want the "old" interface should install wireshark-gtk.
