[SOLVED] installation of softmaker office 2012

Postby zaivala » Jul 16th, '15, 19:04

I downloaded and installed a Trial Version of Softmaker Office 2012 for Linux. It works fine. I decided to purchase it. Downloaded the package. It won't install.

I am doing the same thing I did to get the Trial version, downloaded the RPM file and clicked on it. The installer comes up and asks me whether I want to save it (it's saved already) or install it. I click on Install. The box goes away, a little blip box comes up just long enough to see that it is an error message but not what is on the error message, and that's all.

Do I need to uninstall the trial version first? No instructions on that. And since it was not installed using the Mageia Control Center, I have no idea how.

You don't like libreoffice, or calligra or goffice ?

Please open a terminal and change to the folder where you downloaded that package. Then do the following
Code: Select all
su
# enter your root password
urpmi ./name_of_softmaker_office_2012.rpm

and post the output here.

I've never tried calligra. Goffice is good, a little better than LibreOffice, but neither are up to snuff for my previous job as a professional editor -- converting files from and to Word format nearly always messes up the formatting and the document has to be reformatted from scratch. I had two other glitches I reported to OpenOffice.org (yes, it was a few years ago), and they informed me they were not interested in fixing them. SoftMaker Office is even better than Mickeysoft Office, and it loads several times faster than LibreOffice anyhow.

Thank you for your help, I believe that was exactly what I was looking for. Using su changes from one distro to another, and I could not find out how to do it in Mageia... some "help" statements seemed to say that I use "su" "username" and "command" in the same line.

Nope, su does the same for all distros, it is a standard tool, and a pretty old one.

some examples:
su switch user to any user (defaults to root if omitted), preserves your current environment variables
su - switch user to user (defaults to root if omitted), initialize a full session with roots environment variables
su -c "some command" do not start a sheel, but run "some command" as user (defaults to root if omitted)

Please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [SOLVED], thanks

It is not solved. I now know how to install the new software. But the old, Trial version is reporting the same as the new, Full version. And the Mageia installer won't touch it, as the software is not from their repositories. So attempting to install the Full Version only results in a (microseconds-long) message that the software is already installed, and nobody has yet given me the RPM command to UNINSTALL the software... or, if they have, I am not in the right directory to do so... for whichever reason (did I mention I'm a n00b? I keep getting answers above my level), I'm still using the Trial version. Which expires shortly.

You did not share the output. Please post the exact command you used, and the complete output.

Also share the output of
Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -i softmaker

so that we can see what is already installed. You can uninstall that trial package as root via
Code: Select all
urpme softmaker-office

For software manage please first read https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Install_medi ... _beginners and https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Install_and_ ... _beginners to get started with software management in Mageia.

Error loading mate-screenshot, couldn't find the process.

The "urpme softmaker-office" was what I was looking for. Apparently I was trying to identify the package with the full numbers, i.e. "urpme ./name_of_softmaker_office_2012.rpm" (yes, I filled in the version number, softmaker-office-2012-698.i386.rpm)

So, other than the printer problem, in another topic, and sound for Kodi (yet another topic), I'm good for now.
