[SOLVED] How to remove Application launcher menu in KDE4?

I have just installed Mageia 5 with Plasma desktop (KDE4). I want to replace the default application launcher with homerun kicker, now I have installed the package for homerun and can add it to the panel but what I cannot do is remove the default launcher.

I click on the cashew on the far right of the taskbar to bring up the settings then when hovering mouse over the launcher icon move mouse on to tab above and click on the X button to remove it but it fails to remove. The widgets are not locked. So I do you remove this launcher from the panel?

Cat,

Click the icon all the way to the right to add/remove items from the panel. You should be able to "deselect" the default launcher. If not then after opening the add/remove panel, right click on the launcher and see if a "remove" option is listed. Been a while since I used KDE (switched to LXQT), but I recall this being the method.

Thanks for your reply ChuangTzu

There is no add/remove function at the far right of the panel when you click on the cashew to edit panel. I had added a second launcher on to the panel and was able to remove that but it is still not allowing me to remove the original launcher, it's as if the icon is "write protected".

The only other way I can think of is to create a new panel with all icons that I want on it then remove the original panel, but it's a long winded way of removing one icon though.

I have just noticed that as well as the application launcher widget not removing but also the widgets for pager activities and show desktop can't be removed. They seem to be locked but cannot find anyway of unlocking them, no other widgets are locked.

Is this a bug or have Mageia done this deliberately?

Hi Catowner,

Mageia's magic

You need to unlock the widgets first.

To do this : Right click on "Desktop" at the top right of your screen, and then click "Unlock Widgets".

Refer to : First steps with KDE for more information.

Cheers

If he would not have unlocked the widgets, he would not be able to see/click the cashew. But nice try :)

You can remove plasmoids in two ways, after you put the control panel in "edit mode" by clicking on the cashew.
1. mouse-over on the plasmoid, and when you see the name/description of it hovering directly above the plasmoid, gently move your mouse there and on the right-end of that mouseover effect click the X to remove that plasmoid
2. right-click on the plasmoid and click on "Remove _name of plasmoid here_"

Last time I tried everything could be removed from the control panel. AFAIK nothing has been blocked there deliberately, maybe your KDE settings just got confused, happens from time to time.

Dumb question: Did you ask also in https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=6 ... 80#p336866
You may want to double-check that that was a dead thread, 3 years since the last reply.

There's a bug in KDE where when you want to drag&drop a file and accidentally hit the control panel in the process,
sometimes a transparent rectangle is created. It cannot be moved or removed. You either need to carefully edit it out manually
from ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc or you need to recreate your panel. Latter option takes like what - 2 minutes?

How much time did you need to invest in this thread and trying back-and-forth yet? ;)

I booted the computer using the live DVD of Mageia 5 to see if the bug was on the disk. After booting up, I unlocked the widgets and attempted to remove the application launcher. To my surprise the widget was removed. The bug must have appeared sometime during the installation.

Now here's what I think was strange, after doing a few amendments to the desktop on the live edition I then ran the installer to re-install Mageia 5 on the computer. After it had re-installed everything and logged in I noticed that the amendments I had made on the live system had been transferred to the installed system. The widgets I had removed in the live system was not there on the installed system.

Anyway the bug seems to have disappeared now and this matter is solved.

That is expected, and does not only apply to KDE settings.
