Thanks Jim. I struggled with this, uninstalling anything to do with latex, without success. The key was in your link, and when I ran
urpme --auto-orphans
the problem went away.
If the moderator wonders why I originally posted this in the "Advanced support" forum, it's because the query didn't fit into any of the "Basic support" forum categories (Networking, Video, Sound, Printers and printing). It is very difficult to choose the correct forum- any query I can't answer is advanced, to me!
