Still no go. I think we're flogging a dead horse here - time to give up I think even though I hate to be beaten.

Many thanks,

Paul.

I installed Adobe Reader 9 from the Adobe website (using Adobe rpm package) on Mageia 3. It appears under "Office -> More -> Adobe Reader", right under "AbiWord' on my menu and it works fine, but it is 9.5.4. I wonder if they screwed something up with the newer version? - George

Nope - 9.5.5, which is the latest version available on their ftp, works fine here.

@paulcbrennan2001: Anyways, please mark the thread accordingly by editing the topic of the first post and prefix it by [DONE], thanks

I installed the rpm of Adobe Reader 9.5.4 on Mageia 3 of three computers, all 32-bit, before realizing there was a newer version and it did not appear in the menu of any of them. I had to add them manually. Same thing for Adobe Reader 9.5.5. Neither one installed the Firefox plugin, either. (Not that I really wanted it.) The last one that I remember adding itself to the KDE menu was 9.5.1, with Mageia 2. Both did work once installed, though.

Could it be a 32-bit thing, originating at Adobe? I wouldn't be surprised, knowing that Adobe dropped Linux support for older processors with the 11.2 Flashplayer plugin. I think I'll try the .bin version, and see what happens there.

That did it. The .bin version of Adobe Reader 9.5.5 installed it in the menu, installed the plugin, and made it the primary choice for viewing pdf files, just as it always did before with the rpm version. No idea why the rpm doesn't do it any more.

Its because apparently the rpm package doesn't install a key file that causes it to appear on the menu. That must have happened when I installed it and I probably copied that file from /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Support or some such obvious location to /usr/share/applications and made it work. I do that sometimes without even realizing it. One would think that Adobe would be more careful when they build their packages. Oh well, if Paul wants Adobe Reader, now he knows how to get it. I hate "bin" installs though because they are a nosebleed to remove or upgrade compared to rpms and they present some degree of security issues since they make it harder to keep tabs on what is on the system at any given moment in time.
