Foobar not showing album covers in list view, but still showing them in album cover panel. On the other hand gdiplus has improved the appearance of fonts.

Your commands are not working, that's why wine-staging are not using them.

I searched Drake first, didn't find cabextract, so I googled for it and installed version 1.6 of Cauldron from RPM find. I have 'Core', 'Non-free' and 'Tainted' configured. I don't have 'Debug' and 'Backport' repos.

What is the added benefit I am aiming for with another version of Wine? I am now very wary of tinkering with Wine. I have already broken something in Foobar, but luckily music is still playing back at 32 bit rate, and all plugins like 'Direct Sound' are working again. I also have another very critical app running on Wine. The fonts are somewhat better looking already. I can live with this current config.

Does install of .Net 2.0 disable Mono? Why do I need .Net 2.0? Could it be the reason why my album covers are not showing in list view of Foobar?

You may want to set the filter from "Packages with GUI" to "All packages".
See the "Warning" section at http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/ ... html#d4e65

And you shouldn't google for packages, better ask if you don't find something before installing arbitrary packages.

You will probably need to answer this for yourself, what you're aiming for.
Other people might want to run newer wine versions for the bugs that have been fixed in between, or newer features that have been introduced.
Maybe read what is written at http://www.wine-staging.com/

How do I check if Mono is installed/loading?

Thanks for that. I only want better looking fonts, everything else was fine. I think gdiplus did improve the fonts, but something else is broken. My past experience tinkering with Wine is trying to fix one thing breaks something else quite often. Not keeping a backup was a mistake.

I have my filters set to 'All' but search for cabextract shows only the Cauldron one I installed manually. (screenshot attached)

I recall during .Net 2.0 install it said something about disabling mono. I have already uninstalled .Net 2.0 but now I am trying to find out if wine-mono has been restored to its previous condition. I am doing what I can to restore the wine config to what it was before Foobar's album cover listing broke. I have no idea what broke it, I am going by guesswork.

Will installing Back In Time be able to restore an older version of .wine? Probably not, but just checking.

If you don't had a backup before, you can't create one now.

I am going to close Wine apps, rename the .wine folder to .wine-old and restart wine. Then I will copy over the MT4 related folder from the old AppData to the same place in the new fake C drive. My Foobar installation was 'Portable' anyway, so the folder is in my Desktop. I will install the .msstyles for XP, the gdiplus libraries and the regedits for font smoothing. Then I will re-install MT4 and Foobar with the new .wine environment. This way I will have the default Wine as I had before with improved fonts only, nothing more added.

Any obvious problems with this plan? Any criticisms or suggestions appreciated.

For renaming the .wine folder better use e.g. a timestamp as there may be a need to have several backups. I like to use
Code: Select all
mv ~/.wine ~/.wine-$(date +"%Y%m%d")
which uses the current date as part of the folder name and in normal sort order the newest always comes first.

Which regedits for font smoothing do you want to use?

I ran the regedit provided by Winetricks in Settings, for RGB monitors. I am going to delete the backup .wine dir because I am done tinkering. I am going to use this system now, no more tinkering.

The album covers did not come back in Foobar list view. It is a very nice feature but the sound is the main thing, and it is working. Wine does not claim to work 100% anyway. One can't have everything in life, that's how it goes.

So far, I am doing without ESPN and TV on demand (I only watch 2 shows anyway) -- both of those are Adobe related problems, nothing Linux can do about it. I have another Thinkpad in the bedroom for that.

In case another MT4 user has to do this in future, you have to copy over the contents of the MT4 folder from 'Program Files' in the old C drive to the new C drive, not only the folder from 'Application Data'. This way you will have your saved templates and default settings from before. I did not even need to login again, it remembered my password and logged me in, and loaded my account data correctly.

Removing the GDI+ native brought the album covers back in Foobar. So, create a separate "bottle" for Foobar, if you need GDI+ for other applications.
