X crashes when I click on any .flv files

Postby cooper » Oct 21st, '11, 09:49

This is only happening on one system out of 2 that are running mageia. X windows crashes after I click on any downloaded and saved .flv file. I have looked in some of the log files to find out what the crash was about, and I did not find anything. A very strange and critical bug.

With what is the .flv file opened? You can look into the file associations of your desktop environment and search for flv and look that the default is.
In any case, as you are the first to report this, could you give a link to such an .flv file?

What happens if you rename an empty file (or perhaps a text file) .flv and then click on it? What desktop are you using?

Renaming the file still crashes x if it is a video file. If the file is a text file with a .flv at the end it reads it as a normal text file.

Perhaps the problem is with the thumbnail software. Try switching off thumbnail previews. If you use GNOME, you can do it from the file manager window (nautilus) edit->preferences, preview tab, and then select 'never' for both 'sound' and 'other previewable'. I don't know about other desktops, but I presume there is a similar option.

Another diagnostic test I would like you to do would be to try and open the flv file from the command line. Something like 'mplayer myfile.flv' in the appropriate directory.

X will crash from the command line as well. I would say it may have something to do with the video setting. Just a guess at this time.

This problem is really annoying because I cannot edit any kind of flash video on that system using kdenlive for youtube. I am stuck using mandriva on the other systems I have.

But it seems it is not annoying enough to provide requested/sufficient informations about the problem and your configuration ...

If it is X which crashes (and not the desktop environment) it probably has something to do with VDPAU and the graphics driver in general. If it crashes from the command line, it is nothing Gnome/KDE related. We will need a lot more information. Why don't you answer any of doktor5000's questions?
