Bootable USB question

Postby Mentation » May 15th, '26, 06:51

Hi! Was trying to create a bootable USB in order to test out Mageia 9 on my old Macbook from 2010.
Once I was done with balena, the laptop told that the USB couldn't be read and as I tried to boot it anyway, it didn't find the USB.
The USB (16 GB) in question held a bootable Ubuntu that I no longer need. And I chose the 32 bit version since I was unsure if my old laptop can handle that. Any ideas where I went wrong?
Thank you!

Hi there, what Mageia image did you use in particular? And with balena you're probably referring to balena etcher ?
For recommended tools to write images to USB devices, have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation ... lash_drive

That MacBook has a 64bit CPU and can run macOS 10.5.7 thru 10.11.6, all of which are 64bit operating systems. Try normal Mageia x86_64 and see how it goes.

Please report back how it goes.
We should add some method suitable for Mac on our wiki page about flashing our ISOs to USB.
At home & work Mandriva since 2006, Mageia 2011. Thinkpad T43, T510, Dell M4400, M6300, Acer Aspire 7. Workstation using LVM, LUKS, VirtualBox

FWIW, for burning ISOs there's https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Writing_CD_a ... h_Mac_OS_X
The builtin diskutil command can also write ISOs like with dd, see e.g. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/25 ... ortBy=rank

For GUI tools, balena etcher seems to be the most popular opensource tool for MacOS apart from unetbootin,
although it seems it needs the following option enabled in extended settings to behave like dd for all images: "Clone drive onto target (DD mode)"
Currently we have etcher only listed for windows here: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Dump_Mageia_ ... tive_tools
