[SOLVED] KDE4 looks like KDE3 in Mageia 1?!

Postby DiBosco » Aug 31st, '11, 21:36

Hi folks,

Long time Mandriva user having a play with Mageia. I've done the standard KDE4 install and I it looks really old fashioned. Square buttons, drab and tired feel to it. When I got back to Mandy 2010.0 it looks so vibrant and modern in comparison.

Do other people find this? Do I just need to use a different theme? Thanks. :)

Can you post a screen-shot, so that we can see what do you mean?

KDE 4.6 looks like KDE 4.6 everywhere else, when they are using the same theme.
And you compare this to 2010.0?

Apparently not, the Print Screen key doesn't seem to work!

I'm telling you it doesn't on this installation! :) I tried Mandriva 2011 last night and it looked different, but good on this lappy. And yes, compared to 2010.0 this looks really old fashioned. I know KDE4 isn't to everyone's taste, but I love it normally!

From what media did you install Mageia? Live, FreeDVD? printscreen key is working here.

Does this look like KDE3 to you?

Nothing fancy, just oxygen style & Glassified theme.

As doktor5000 wrote

Unless you're talking about the Ia-Ora theme & style that comes as default with Mageia.
But, since you're a long time Mandriva user (like me), you know already, that Ia-Ora theme & style are the defaults for Mandriva also,
even before 2010.0 version. Until version 2010.2.
So, I don't understand what's the difference -in default looks- between Mandriva 2010.0 and Mageia 1. AFAIR, they are the same (except the wallpaper).
Too bad "PrtScn" key doesn't work.
But, you can try it from menu: Menu >> Graphics >> KSnapshot (it's installed by default).
A screen-shot could help to understand what you really mean.

Looks the same here, only without desktop effects (glowing window outline etc.) ;)
Doesn't look like KDE3 to me.

To load ksnapshot on hitting the PrtScrn button :-

menu>tools>systemtool>systemSettings>ShortcutsandGestures>GlobalKeyboardShortcuts>khotkeys
Assign the PrtScrn button to the PrintScreen function.

Both problems could also be upgrade issues, or old settings imported into ~/.kde4/, seems more likely to me.

Are you sure it is not a product for Mandriva 2011 from our friends from MIB?

Looks like it was an artefact of a previous install as a clean install with formatting /home improved things.

I must say Mandriva 2011 looks absolutely awesome compared to Mageia. Shame it (2011) doesn't work very well. ;) I'm guessing it's the latest version of KDE (4.7 I think) as much as anything and this will come soonish to Mageia.

No, Mandriva 2011 has the same KDE version as Mageias latest update, 4.6.5, they only use Rosalabs theme for KDE.
Also, i don't know where it looks absolutely awesome compared to Mageia, but that's personal taste.
And taste is debatable.

From what I have seen, Mandriva 2011.0 looks great. And that's all. It seems the focus was on vibrant design more than on stability and ergonomy. I hope Mandriva 2011.1 will correct these flaws.

Mandria uses experimental Rosalabs widgets (Mainly rosa taskbar and a couple of rosa plasmoids like timeline or search widget).

They are like Unity and Gnome 3 : nice ideas (very nice for timeline if you ask me) but they'll need time to get rock-solid and ready to be used by everybody ;)

Now remember also that Mageia1 was just meant to :

-- Create a stable and cleaned basis starting from Mandriva 2010 (nothing new planned because there was so much work needed to create build system, organize teams and produce a first stable version)
-- Prove teams and infrastructure ability to produce a Linux Disto (to avoid duke-nukem-forever effect :D)

So you are comparing Mandriva 2011 with something which is a cleaned/stabilized/quickly-re-looked 2010...

If you want to see a few Mageia improvements check Mageia Cauldron (always-in-development version) or wait to check Mageia 2 ;)

Mageia Cauldron comes already with 4.7 (4.7.1 at the moment but i think it may change before mageia 2 freeze).

This was the reason, btw. I deleted the directory and restarted which made it look like KDE4 again.
