MGA9 error on Acer Aspire: couldn't install grub2

Postby hugomarc » Sep 11th, '24, 16:22

I tried to install MGA9 64bit on an Acer Aspire 4520 pc (64bit). The pc was built in 2008, but was working with MGA7. I decided to reformat the HD, but keeping /home as it was.

Using the Live cd on a usb stick and IceWM as DE, I started MGA 9 in Live mode. Then choose to install the system on the hard disk. (so I didn't install MGA9 directly from the Live grub starting menu)
The installation looked promising: packages were installed, boot device /dev/sda was formatted.

Then came the step for installing grub2 with graphical mode. The installer began installing, but immediately stopped with this error message: "Couldn´t install the grub package". I tried several times, no succes.

I do not want grub2 with text menu, I like the GUI better.

From the 2GB memory, there is still 220 MB free.

What can I do to complete the installation succesfully?

Regards,

Marc.

At that point you should switch to the console which has the logs, not sure whether it was Ctrl+Alt+F3 or Ctrl+Alt+F4 and check for any hints on why.
Apart from that I'd not install from the live image if you have limited space, better grab the DVD and do a minimal install with only the stuff you need.

Doktor, thank you for the advise not to install from a Live CD. (BTW: why not? The Live CD offers an option to install MGA9 on the harddisk. Is that not a stable option? Then it shouldn't be offered like that).

I finally managed to install MGA9 on this very old Acer Aspire 4520 pc by installing the Classic install (64 bits) on a usb stick per Isodumper (GTK).

It only works with IceWM als desktop environment. Plasma as DE is still unstable, with many graphical hangups.

It took a lot (and more than a lot) of reinstalls and updating, but in the end I have a working system under IceWM (be it rather slow, but hey, the pc if from 2008!).

The downloaded Classic install from the MGA website was at first very unstable, graphics were terrible to see, the screen did hang many times, forcing me to install the system again and again. I had to inactivate alle the KDE graphical screen animations.

Only after an update of 780 MGA9 files the system rebooted in a rather smooth style.

That's a little surprising. I have a Acer Aspire 5315 from 2008 . 1.73GHz Celeron with 2 GB RAM.

It's running MGA 9 with KDE Plasma and everything is fairly useable. Kind of slow to load Firefox, but that is expected.

I've never mentioned anything about not stable at all. But your OP was about that you only had 200MB space left. The live media are finished images, you cannot customize them or save some space, either you install them fully as-is or you don't install them.

Maybe he meant 200MB of disk space, but he actually said 200MB left of 2GB memory. As in RAM?
