[SOLVED] Install MGA9 RC1 and later update to MGA9?

Postby maluethy » Aug 11th, '23, 08:17

I want and should reinstall Mageia on two computers. Mageia 9 is about to be released. I am considering installing MGA9 RC1 instead of MGA8 so I don't have to update from MGA8 to MGA9 in a short time. According to the release notes, MGA9 RC1 is still a beta version and it may still contain bugs. If I can basically work with the computer, I can handle it. What about updating or upgrading MGA9 RC1? Does MGA9 RC1 automatically go into an MGA9 or is there something I have to do manually? Are bugs that are fixed in MGA9 automatically fixed in MGA9 RC1? If not what would be the procedure to upgrade from MGA9 RC1 to MGA9?

Thanks in advance for the support.

currently, the active repos are
Mga8, Mga9 and cauldron.
Also, currently, anything in a cauldron repo is also in an Mga9 repo, they are concurrently tracking.

If you choose to install Mga9 RC1, its default repos are Mga9.
Any updates available would be applied to (64bit) core-release, nonfree-release, tainted-release (and the 32bit versions).

After Mga9 Official is released, then the cauldron and Mga9 repos diverge, with cauldron quickly becoming Mga10, and you would have to check and/or enable the "updates" repos.

For general use (web browsing, video transcribing, audio transcribing) for me Mga9 has shown to be reasonably stable. As always YMMV!
If you do choose to install Mga9 RC1, just by keeping it updated, and there are a few updates available every day, will make it be the same as Mga9 Official, when it is released.

If it, Mga9, suits your use case, then upgrade your other existing system.
Best of luck.

You could try a Live Mageia 9, booting on a USB stick and leave the original system untouched just for compatibility testing.
Use it with persistence so it can have updates.
Then you can have that USB stick to try on all your computers before upgrading them.
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Persistent_live_systems
( Do not install from live to computer; it will overwrite instead of upgrading. )

I use the computers to be updated mainly for everyday office work such as word processing, email / Thunderbird, web browser / Firefox.

Thanks for the tip about the Live Mageia 9.

Thanks for the explanations with the repos. I guess checking and switching the repos should be possible easily via the Mageia Control Centre?

In the online help I found the instructions "Do you have the online software repositories set up correctly?" Will it be obvious in the Mageia Control Centre which repos are for MGA9 and which are for cauldron? In the online help I see the labels "Core Release", "Core Updates", "Non-free Release", "Non-free Updates" but no label for a version like for example MGA8 or cauldron.

There is no mga9 repo yet, that is just a symlink to cauldron, that's why they are the same.
Cauldron is not for the faint of heart!

I was able to install Mageia 9 RC1 successfully. However, the system did not receive any updates and I became aware of the forum post
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=15014&p=88110&hilit=update

While reading the forum post, I noticed that I didn't quite understand the repositories topic. With the new installation of the system, a few unexpected issues came wiping in and so I let the repositories issue be (I had to reinstall the computer).

Thanks for the prompt information.
