Mageia 8 freezes after minimizing/maximing windows

Postby epp » Aug 23rd, '22, 22:30

Within the past several days, Mageia 8 (host) has frozen after a few hours. When this occurs, the video initially went to black, comes back on, goes to black, etc. VIrtualBox is always running when this happens. Due to the host memory being maxed out at 8 GB, I can only use and run one VBox (using 4 GB) at any one time. Neither the host nor the VBox runs out of memory, If the video managed to come back on and stay on, I can move the mouse, but clicking anything on the host or in the VBox (if maximized), produces no response. The video going back and forth was on a 22" LG LCD monitor.

I have since switched the monitor to a 22" Samsung LCD. At the outset, the video repeated as above, but since then, when it occurs, the video has remained on, but the interface is unresponsive again as described above. I also unexpectedly caused it to occur with the VirtualBox manager window open but minimized and a VBox running, also minimized. After repeatedly clicking the VBox Manager tab on the bottom Xfce panel, the host became unresponsive again after several clicks. When this occurs, the bottom Xfce panel becomes grayed out. The only way to get the system back is to manually power it off, as is, then power it back on.

This occurs whether the monitor is connected to the PC via a VGA cable, or via a DVI-to-HDMI cable (DVI output on PC, HDMI input on monitor).

I looked at the Xorg.0.log.old files upom subsequent powerups and the only 'error' reported, pertained to the USB keyboard, which apparently, is a known issue with other Linux distributions, Was said It ought to be listed as a warning, not an error.

In the Xfrce settings, compositing was turned on but no transparency/opacity occurred with the windows as this setting was on Opaque. I turned that setting off, but it also did not resolve this issue.

The host monitor resolution setting is on 1680x1050, as it provides a larger screen for a VBox when it's running.

I am wondering if perhaps a recent update to X11, Xfce, or something else since late last week might be causing this problem? I added a Window Button to the top Xfce panel with the intent of removing the bottom Xfce panel, but have not yet removed it as I do not know if this is a X11/Xfce/other issue.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mageia 8 freezes after a few hours - video or Xfce issue

After repeatedly clicking the VBox Manager tab on the bottom Xfce panel, the host became unresponsive again after several clicks. When this occurs, the bottom Xfce panel becomes grayed out. The only way to get the system back is to manually power it off, as is, then power it back on.

Was able to replicate this again with another button in the bottom panel.

EDIT: Was able to further replicate with the LXQt desktop. Bug report updated.
