GRUB being wierd

Postby rtspitz » Sep 18th, '21, 20:26

I just installed 8 and fully updated it. I was using an external CDROM and so I installed AcetoneISO for the install media to be present without the CDROM. Upon starting up the next day, GRUB can't find the boot disk.

Here is the thing...I go into BIOS and exit. My m.2 is the only boot device. It boots right up. I reran the boot loading from the Controls and that does not fix it. If I unplug my SATA 3T data drive, it boots right up. Going to attempt that again after I put the SATA to hotplug. Yes, it boots right up without the 3T drive powered.

I ran Win10 bootrec and it can't get rid of GRUB but it boots properly the FIRST time after the Windows bootrec session. Then it reverts to not being able to see the boot disk until after the BIOS.

Rather annoying....

You should check the correct BBS priority (additional to the boot drive) in your BIOS.

What are the grub error messages?

According to your description you are using a dualboot setup. Maybe you will find some hints here https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_in_dual_boot_with_Windows8_and_over and here https://wiki.mageia.org/en/EFI:_can_no_longer_boot_into_Mageia

And why do you need your installation media after you have installed Mageia? You should disable the installation media after you have added the online medias/repositorys (this is the default when you add online repos whilst installation).

I tried to install some software and it wanted the CD.

GRUB gives me an error saying it can't find the boot device.

I also have UEFI turned OFF.

I think there is something on the 3T's MBR from an old install years ago.

Please look here for correct media setup: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_management#The_automatic_way and https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_management

Is there a special reason for this? If your motherboard supports UEFI you should also do an UEFI installation. When you say that you have UEFI disabled, did you make sure that Legacy/CSM mode in your BIOS is on?
