Please clarify which files.
Both journalctl and xsession from cinnamon direct boot exceed the number of allowed lines. How to attach? I can Zip and submit. Would it be OK?

If .Xauthority content is required, please guide me the exact way to get it.

And a question: Is it possible that previously customized xrandr supersedes the cinnamon monitor config files?

You already mentioned which files, I don't get what you need clarified there?

Regarding attaching them, below the forum editor (only available in Full editor, not via quick reply), switch to the tab "Upload attachment".
Upload your files, then when finished, click in the editor window where you want your file to display, and click the button "Place inline".

JJF wrote:And a question: Is it possible that previously customized xrandr supersedes the cinnamon monitor config files?

Depending at what time that xrandr config is loaded, yes that could be possible. Apart from that, the cinnamon monitor config files actually are also basically only customized xrandr configurations.

While I was waiting for a reply in the past few days, I tried to make some progress on my own.
Knowing that cinnamon is a derivative of Mate, I "urpmi task-mate" to restore the previously (long time ago) removed Mate from my box .
To make the story short, I booted cinnamon after installing mate, and the desktop , the menu and panel(s) were there, with some less serious deficiencies.
I still have to fine tune the current cinnamon DE to bring it as close as possible to what I used to see before upgrading to Mageia 7.
I will post more info if I'll make some progress.

It was too early to celebrate as even after installing Mate, the cinnamon DE behave oddly

I attached the requested files

More info:
The major misbehaviours are: 1. Message
Cinnamon just crashed
after boot
2. Panel looks so much similar to Mate panel and not was used to be befor the upgrade
3. Desktop does not display the icons I used to se before the upgrade. Essentially it is empty
4. No move or resize of applications windows . The windows cover only part of the screen
5. Applicaions windows cover each other . Can't move the windows around
Your advice will be appreciated

.xsession-errors and journalctl logs seems to be an one when you ran KDE, you need to create/copy away the files when you actually started cinnamon and when it doesn't work.
Then attach them later here.

When I boot directly into cinnamon, the desktop displays the flash screen, only. There is no panel neither menu, and I am unable to do anything.
I can send the required files only if I login after logout from plasma, then I can access the console. If this is OK, I'll upload the files later.

No, sorry but that doesn't help. And yes, even if you don't have a panel, you can still copy over those files in a tty.
Once you started your cinnamon session, switch to another tty via e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F2 and then login as root, and write the complete journal log to a text file using e.g.
Code: Select all
journalctl -ab > /tmp/journal.txt
and afterwards upload that text file here (or pastebin it or similar). Same for xsession-errors.

The journal file you uploaded contains this error, as mentioned previously:

Code: Select all

Apart from that, I don't see any obvious issues regarding your cinnamon session.

I don't see any obvious issues. Last entry from cinnamon is this one, as mentioned above already several times:

Code: Select all
Jul 22 16:58:24 localhost.localdomain kernel: cinnamon[3134]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fd26c637eee sp 00007fffbc0284c0 error 4 in libupower-glib.so.3.0.1[7fd26c636000+13000]

What happens if you select Cinnamon (Software Rendering) session in your login manager?

Can you show the output of

Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep -iE "cinnamon|upower-glib"

1. cinnamon (software rendering) acts similar to cinnamon DE before I installed mate.
Desktop icons are there together with 2 EMPTY PANELS AT THE BOTTOM OF BOTH SCREENS.
Trying to open firefox using the terminal I got the message:
Problem with your thumbnail cash

[If I login to cinnamon as a new / other than my "normal" user, EVERY THING IS PERFECT]

2.
Code: Select all
rpm -qa|grep -iE "cinnamon|upower-glib" > /home/jacob/tmp/out1.log

    cat out1.log
    cinnamon-screensaver-4.0.3-1.mga7
    lib64cinnamon-screensaver0-4.0.3-1.mga7
    cinnamon-settings-daemon-4.0.3-1.mga7
    cinnamon-menus-4.0.0-1.mga7
    cinnamon-translations-4.0.2-1.mga7
    task-cinnamon-4.0-4.mga7
    cinnamon-desktop-4.0.1-4.mga7
    task-cinnamon-minimal-4.0-4.mga7
    lib64cinnamon-screensaver-gir1.0-4.0.3-1.mga7
    cinnamon-control-center-4.0.1-1.mga7
    lib64upower-glib3-0.99.10-1.mga7
    lib64cinnamon-desktop4-4.0.1-4.mga7
    cinnamon-4.0.10-2.mga7
    cinnamon-session-4.0.0-2.mga7
    lib64cinnamon-desktop-gir1.0-4.0.1-4.mga7
    cinnamon-applet-blueberry-1.2.5-5.mga7

3. The current cinnamon desktop is full of odd behaviour as I mentioned in an earlier reply : Unable to move or resize open windows such as the Terminal window or firefox window(s). When I want to close an open firefox window, the file>drop down menu was displayed for a fraction of a second and disappeared.
The panel is actually gnome panel and not cinnamon's.

4. If I filter journalctl -b in cinnamon DE logged in as "normal" user to display either "error" or "failed" , there are many of them. Would it be helpful if I provide these lines?

You can certainly post them for others to take a look, but I'm not sure whether they would be helpful to figure out why cinnamon is broken for the other user.

Re: No cinnamon panel after upgrade to mageia 7

Postby JJF » Sep 22nd, '19, 12:30

As I experiences system deterioration after steps that I have taken, I solved the problem as described below:

1. Boot "ubunto desktop.iso". It can recognize external USB disks as well as all existing partitions.
2. Mounted all partitions and an externl 1TB disk. Formatted the external disk
3. Backed up personal data to 1TB external hdd both from Windows as well as from Mageia partitions: cp -R //mnt..../* //mnt/External...
2. Restarted using Parted.iso
3. Removed Mageia Partition and reboot
4. Installed Windows from the original Windows distribution disk into the existing Windows partition
5. Create Windows partitions in unalocated disk space
6. Restarted with Mageia 7 64.iso
7. Installed Mageia_Plasma from ISO dvd into existing Windows' partition
8. Reboot to verify that the initial menu included both Windows and Mageia
9. Selected Mageia DT Plasma environment
10. urpmi task-cinnamon
11. Connected External 1TB disk that holds the personal data
12. cp -r //mnt/external/Mageia_Files.../* /home/user/
13. cp -r //mnt/Extenal/Windows_Files../* .../Windows_Partitions/Documents and Settings/User/...?
14. Now I am in the process of restoring packages and applications that has disappeared during the process (ie, add scanner, add USB blutooth donglr and the like)

Very simple

Thanks to all who helped

Re: No cinnamon panel after upgrade to mageia 7

After fresh install I am still struggling with the following issues:
1. Epson v300 scanner setup (Which worked perfectly before upgrading to Mageia 7)
2. ML-1640 Samsung printer connected as USB to windows 10 workstation on the same LAN (Which worked perfectly before the upgrade)
3. Access windows 10 workstation files on the same LAN (Which I could before the fresh install)

Any help will be appreciated
