USB Stick won´t boot

Postby brandy » Jul 28th, '17, 08:55

Hi there!

I was a little off Mageia. Tried different distribution for over a year, to understand how other oses work. Now, with the newest version of Mageia I want go back to my roots.
But I have a problem: I write the Mageia ISO on my stick but it won´t boot. I know you would say it´s the BIOS configuration, but I installed, as said about 8 different distributions, without any change.

At the moment I have Open Suse Tumbleweed running - I recognized, that since then, no bootable sticks boot. I wrote the ISOs with Multiwriter, Suse Studio Image Writer and Unetbootin. Never a problem. I changed the sticks, and on every other computer everything is booting well.

Here you find the photos of my BIOS.

The interesting point here is, that I find my old bootsticks here (Apricity OS, Ubuntu and the latest Open Suse). but I never find the stick, where the Mageia-ISO is dumped on.

What´s wrong here?
Is it possible, that through Open Suse it doesn´t find the USB on boot?

As I know Unetbootin can not create Mageia boot stick. I don't know about Multiwriter and Suse Studio Image Writer, maybe they also can not create Mageia bootable ISO.

There is guaranteed way to create bootable ISO using dd utility:
dd if=/path/to/Mageia-6-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M

where /dev/sdX is USB stick. Be careful to specify correct sdX, otherwise it is possible to lose your data on hard disk.

Thanks for the help - but, unfortunately, makes no difference.
I don´t find the stick in the boot menu - there must be a problem with the BIOS i think.

given that in the 3rd image "opensuse-secureboot" is the first boot option and Ubuntu (which is also secureboot enabled) boot, I would look at the first image you posted.

Are you able to change "Secure boot mode" from normal to off?

The most interesting point is, changing for example the order of the boot options or the bios administrator password doesn´t take place. I can save or save and exit, but it never changes. I changed the password, so that I can change "Secure Boot mode" from "Standard".

As I said, a few months ago, I changed my operating systems very often - everytime I booted from stick and it worked without any change. Now, changing from Open Suse there are so many problems - very interesting.

Thanks for the help!

been having a look online about your bios, google "insydeh20 bios unlock advanced settings".

guessing rev3.5?

advanced settings may be under F10 + A.
