unable to contact KDED

Postby ovince » Feb 20th, '17, 22:37

Hi,

I have Mageia 5 on 64bit machine and KDE 4.14.

When I try to run Service Manager (System Setings > Startup and Shutdown > Service Manager) I get error message "unable to contact KDED". For all services stands "Not running".

Could you help me to solve this issue

Thanks

Hi there, which media did you use to install Mageia, and what login manager do you use? You can see some examples for comparison at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Display_Managers
Also, how do you start KDE? And did you install regular Mageia updates?

And please show the output of
Code: Select all
ps auxwww|grep -v grep|grep -iE "kdm|kdeinit|kded|ksmserver"

Caution: Hot, bubbling magic inside. May explode or cook your kittens!

Hi,

Thank for reply. I am not sure I know answer to all questions ...

Login manager is KDM and I do regular updates. Please clarify "which media did you use to install Mageia" and "how do you start KDE" questions.

This is the output

For the other questions, my question was about which installation media you used, and if you use KDM to start KDE that question is also answered for now.

Output looks good so far. Could it be that you are trying to start one of the KDE5 / Plasma5 tools instead of systemsettings?
Please start systemsettings as your regular user from a terminal, then go to Startup and Shutdown > Service Manager as seen in https://userbase.kde.org/System_Setting ... ce_Manager
and check again. Then post the complete output from the terminal here. Please also mention if that Service_Manager looks the same as the one you are starting directly from start menu.

sorry for long silence.

The problem remains the same via both approaches 1. systemsettings from command line and 2. Start>System Settings>Start and Startup>Service Manager. I attach the image of how it looks like (even the PrintScreen command does not work so this is a cell-phone image ... )

Below the forum editor (only available in Full editor, not via quick reply), switch to the tab "Upload attachment".
Upload your picture, then when finished, click in the editor window where you want your picture to display, and click the button "Place inline".

If you create a new user, and login as that user, does it work then? http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/5/en/content/userdrake.html

Well, best thing to do would be to quit the automatically started kded, and run it in a terminal to see why it stops to work at some point. maybe it crashes.
As regular user, try this:
Code: Select all
killall kded4; sleep 2; kded4

and then keep the terminal open in the background until kded stops working, then post the complete output here.
If you close the terminal, kded will also be ended.

this is the only output after the command series

Object::connect: No such signal QDBusAbstractInterface::StateChanged(uint)

At least I have no message "Unable to contact KDED" and the only service which run is 'Network Status'
