Install nextcloud client from backports [Solved]

Postby xboxboy » Feb 10th, '17, 02:20

I have an nextcloud server set up on my web host. My desktop is Mageia 5, kde, and I installed the owncloud client from the repos', but it is unable to connect due to being unsupported ie. the client is too old.

There is a significantly updated owncloud client in backports
Code: Select all
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/OwnCloud#Latest_ownCloud_is_in_backports_.21

Using my local mirror do I just download
Code: Select all
https://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/mageia/distrib/5/x86_64/media/core/backports/owncloud-client-2.2.4-1.mga5.x86_64.rpm

Then in that directory that it's downloaded to, as root:
Code: Select all
urpmi owncloud-client-2.2.4-1.mag5.x86_64.rpm

I've never used a backport before, this is a key pc at my business so I don't wish to cause any unnecessary down time.

Provided you have not removed the Backports repo, you can use the GUI. Open "Install and Remove Software" in MCC. Change the first filter to "Backports" and search for owncloud-client. Version 2.2.4 is among the packages listed. You do NOT need to enable the Backports repo.

FWIW, you also do not need to first download a package to install it later via urpmi, this is the same with rpm - they both have integrated downloaders, so you can simply install a package directly from a given URL.

If your nextcloud server is on the same lan as the computer you are using, the owncloud client is kind of redundant, unless you want file sync as a backup mechanism or something.
.
My workstation and my nextcloud server are on the same lan, and I just connect via webdav to the cloud server. I can then browse the cloud server as if it was a local filesystem (though a lot slower...owncloud and nextcloud are glacial on webdav).

Here is the script I use to make the connection.
Code: Select all
#! /bin/bash
sudo mount -t davfs2 https://192.168.0.27:12080/nextcloud/remote.php/webdav/ /home/jiml/owncloud -o rw,uid=jiml,gid=jiml

I do use the owncloud client on my laptop, but usually from remote locations.

Jim, I use webdav at home on a raspberri pi...yes, galcial is the word.

But the instance I'm talking about is off site at a paid host, and I use the client so I can work on stuff regardless of internet access.

When a package is installed via backports as Jkerr mentioned, is that then updated via the normal methods? or do I need to keep an eye on backports to see if there's an update?

It is not automatically updated, unless an official update is released. There was a plan to issue Backport Advisories , like Update Advisories, but that has not been done.
