Inputting Chinese characters

Postby paul6245 » Oct 12th, '15, 12:17

Hi
I have been trying to learn Chinese for a while and have been able to input Chinese characters using pinyin on a number of other OS and computers. However, I struggled to find what to use on Mageia5. In the end I think I have ibus, ibus-pinyin and ibus-libpinyin installed. The only way I can get any of this nearly working is to go into: /usr/share/applications and manually start ibus-setup.desktop

From there it appears to allow me to change to pinyin input but it does not work properly. For example, if I want to input "xiang" to get a particular Chinese character, it gets to "xi" and gives me a possible character for that instead of the whole word "xiang". This is the same for many other words such as "wang", "tian" etc.

Any ideas anyone? I have checked all the Mageia info and have found nothing about this.
Thanks
Paul.

Hi there,

I can only refer you to viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5369 which links to relevant sections of the Mageia 3 Errata.
Or maybe viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3814

But I've personally no clue about ibus, pinyin or whathaveyou.

Hi,
These viewtopics you refer to are about starting ibus. I can get it started but it is inputting complete rubbish not the correct Chinese characters. One problem I see is that if you try to change any preferences in the input method for Chinese-pinyin it does not change them. Therefore it is predicting incorrectly what I am trying to type in Chinese.
Thanks again and does anyone have any clue as to why I can't type in Chinese, I don't want to have to keep going back to windows when I want to do this.
Paul
