[Solved] KDE Help Center Errors

Postby Georgiaboy » Oct 11th, '15, 05:31

Hi
I've tried searching through Google and the forum here on this but unable to see where anything has been mentioned before. I'm running Mageia 5 on a Virtualbox on my Debian Wheezy, It's the 32bit live I had downloaded and played with then decided to install on the VB to get the feel of this and KDE before downloading and installing the 64bit. I was trying to look around in the 'help' section and keep getting errors. The subjects on left hand side will show but when I click on the subjects I'll get an error about it not being "item/index.hmtl doesn't exist. I've taken a snapshot to try and show what I'm talking about. It's basically on anything on the contents section of help. Is there anything to try and correct this on? I'm using an Asus A53S laptop running this on VB with Debian Wheezy as host. So far most of the stuff I've been checking out seems to be working. That is the stuff I understand about. This is the first time I've ever had any dealings with KDE. I started with Gnome on Ubuntu and then swapped to XFCE and have been running with XFCE on Debian ever since. But the 32bit live was either KDE or Gnome and I chose KDE to learn and play with before doing the 64bit DVD download and installation along side of what I have already.
Hopefully someone here will know what I'm going through here and can guide me on this.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Update. I went into MCC and installed the khelpcenter and the khelpcenter book. Now when I go to the help section I can get some documentation KDE Fundamentals, and Online help. Then Applications on to Unix I get this thing saying Documentation not found to go to the KDE Documentation Site. This goes all the way through eveerything until I get to Unix part. Then afterwards Scrollkeeper is blank but Browse Info Pages seems to be working.

Is this the norm for running Mageia under KDE? As I've never ran KDE before I was wondering if something is still messed up with this and that there is something else I need to do to correct or is this what is normal.

Thanks in advance for your help.

As I understand it the help-centre only shows entries for installed programs and the entries are contained within the rpm's.of each program.

But back when the Live version was a CD in order to save space the handbooks were removed from the rpm's and this likely carried over to the Live DVDs.

If you install from the regular DVD not the Live DVD the entries will be populated.

The KDE4 handbooks (which are accessed in the help centre) are available as separate packages. They can be listed:
Code: Select all
urpmq --fuzzy handbook

If the live DVD was used to install Mageia, to install the handbooks for all applications included in the DVD:
Code: Select all
 urpmi task-kde4-handbooks-dvd

To install all of the handbooks:
Code: Select all
 urpmi task-kde4-handbooks

What I had done was get the 32bit Live CD and put it on the Virtualbox. I didn't know about the help not being installed like that. I'm used to doing the apt-get in Debian Root. How do I go about this in Mageia? I'm not familiar with the commands here. Or do I go to the MCC and do the select all and put in [Code]urpmi task-kde4-handbooks[code] ? Or does this need to be done in a terminal and if so what be commands for doing so? Sorry. Learning new system here and terminology between OS's are just a tad bit different. :)

I'm wondering if I should download a full DVD iso and then bring in that iso into a virtualbox. But if can play around with what I have and make work then will be a learning experience that will stick better with me in learning this format. Too easy to just start all over. To me you don't really learn anything about the OS and how to fix if you just remove and reinstall all the time. ;)

I wish to thank you for the responses I've received so far. Very fast and informative. As you noticed I found a couple of the handbooks and installed and some stuff were opening up. But then some others were saying to go to the KDE help site instead of having anything in the help section. Lists an item and the you click on it and get a message on right hand side referring you to the KDE help site instead of having anything there to help. So got to wondering if that was the norm with KDE or not. I also noticed that when I had downloaded the Plasma(?)handbook that the KDE went away. So went and removed that and went back with the KDE handbooks.

Sorry for sounding dumb here but it's something strange when I've been used to Gnome and XFCE. This is the first time for me trying out KDE. Take that back. I tried out a Knoppix that someone loaned me w/o telling me anything when I first tried a Linux format. That almost turned me away from Linux until an IT security burned off Ubuntu in Gnome for me. Liked it, stayed with it until I got into XFCE. But the 'Live' CD was either KDE or Gnome and I decided to try out something new in KDE. So a learning curve again in that plus the commands if using terminal here are new to me also. As mentioned, have been using/learning the commands for the Debian based all along and each of the various OS's have their own way of doing things.

All of the Mageia documentation is accessible from this wiki page:

If you really want to try KDE, better use the normal non-live DVD and do a regular installation.
The live cd is a really stripped-down barebones version, as it does not offer enough space to get everything in there.

And then best make sure to install task-kde4 and task-kde4-handbooks packages to get the majority of KDE itself and the documentation, if you require that.

You might also want to have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/First_step_with_KDE

Thanks for the links and tips. I'm on desktop at moment and bookmarked them here also. Will get on the laptop and do same and follow the tips with it. Figured that a lot of stuff was stripped from the live cd and that I'd be doing some installing of stuff I was wanting. Was just thrown a curve ball when I went into the help section ans was getting 'ding' sound each time I clicked on something and then now the 'go to KDE site' upon installing two of the helpbooks. Will see how this goes. Thanks again for the quick responses. :)

A great thanks to all here. I got the packages installed for the handbooks. Beautiful!!!! Now I can kick back and read up on all and their functions w/o having to go all over hell and back. Again, thank you for all the help. Wonderful spot and with the quick help like this also. Going to really enjoy hanging around in here. Will be able to pick up a lot of information and who knows maybe have something that can be of help to others. I hope so anyhow. Now to see if I can find the Solve button here.
