Mageia 5-64bit Install failed on Legacy BIOS machine

Postby gnonymuss » Oct 11th, '15, 03:17

Hello,
I ran into a problem trying to install Mageia 5. I tried to install Mageia 5-64bit from a live boot DVD that came from Linux Format magazine.

My troubles began during the partitioning section of the install. I have a multi boot install. I selected the partition in which Mageia was to be installed. Then, I received this error: “You must have a ESP FAT32 partition mounted in /boot/EFI”. I clicked OK and it went back to the partitioning section. Nothing I could do would correct the error. Also, in this section of the installer, there is no easy way to cancel the install.

The only way to get out of the install was to restart the PC.

After some research, I found it likely that the problem is that my PC still uses legacy BIOS mode to boot.

My question is this: Does Mageia 5-64bit support installation on a PC that uses legacy BIOS mode?
Thanks in advance,
Corey

Hi,

yes we support both. Please see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_5_Err ... egacy_mode
and https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installing_o ... I_firmware

But you have to boot your system in legacy mode to proceed with a legacy install,
currently that cannot be dynamically handled by the bootloader/installer.

I've also opened a bug report about that, so maybe this can be fixed for Mageia 6: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16395
