[SOLVED]Mageia 5 Grub installation failed.

Postby premkumaru » Oct 1st, '15, 13:21

I installed Mageia 5 using a USB in my machine. I have a 2TB hard disk and a 500GB hard disk in my machine. I tried installing in 2TB HDD and I left 500GB HDD empty. While installing, the installation completed smoothly without any error. When I reboot my machine, it boots windows (I installed windows already in my machine). I am confused and boots my machine with the USB again and entered rescue mode. I choose re-install boot loader option and the screen asks me to continue by pressing Enter key. At the time I saw some messages reporting that Mageia is found in one of the partitions. When I press Enter key, the boot loader installation failed with the following messages.

Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds max supported by BIOS
Error 12 : Invalid device requested.

But I already tried Xubuntu in my machine with the same partitions and it works fine along with windows. Now I don't know what to do further. Please help me to install the grub loader.

I don't know if installation is with grub-legacy or grub2 (Mageia allows both, and prior to M5, always use grub-legacy unless overidden; my M5 is from Cauldron)
But since you wrote..

I assume you can boot Xubuntu and if this is the case, boot up to Xubuntu and at terminal
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub

That should enable Mageia in its grub menu entry (if Mageia is truly installed properly otherwise).
Why do we live? To prove not everything in nature has a purpose.

Finally I reinstalled Mageia 5 and booted succesfully. While reinstalling I selected Grub2 on 2TB HDD and It works fine.

Dear Gohlip,
Thank you for your kind answer. I overwrite mageia, so I can't boot Xubuntu. But I got the idea of reinstalling with Grub2 with the answer you posted. Thank you.
