Bootable USB dos not run

Postby gubundo » Sep 2nd, '15, 16:41

I 'm getting crazy : I've tried everything to make my USB bootable, by following the indications. It does not work, even after ensuring that my laptop computer starts on USB...Live USB does not work either. Only the Kernel loads after selecting "Mageia 5 installation", then, black screen .....
Is there any way to install Mageia without using a USB ??

Thanks !

Don't use !!! as that is often disregarded as shouting. Hint: Punctuation marks don't come in herds.

And please, at the very least provide some basic information:
What indications (do you mean instructions?) did you follow? What particular Mageia media did you try to write to usb drive, and how did you do it?
Did you verify the checksum of the image you downloaded?

Apart from that, there are several ways that do not require an usb drive. You can burn the images to CD or to DVD depending on the size.
You can also load the image directly from grub, but that is not that easy. Explained e.g. here for grub2: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=8441
Or (more highlevel, if you know how to run stage1 installer) here: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Stage_One_in ... _images.29

I think that topic title is misleading. This actually seems like an issue with graphic card driver.

Hi
thanks for your reply, and sorry for the punctuation..

I did follow the instructions given in the website, here https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Supports_d%2 ... 9rique_USB

sorry it's in French, but in Summary :
- I downloaded different versions of Mageia 5 : Dual Arch, Iso LIve, full installation...
Then I did verify the checksum : no issues so for.
then I used different softwares to make a bootable USB key : linuxliveusb.com, isotousb.com/, USB dumper, ...
Then , the issues arrive :
1st- I cannot boot on the USB after changing the BIOS settings
2nd : the only way is that I run the Oracle Virtual Box, but I get every time a black screen after loading the Kernel...

I am using a new model laptop : HP Stream 13-c012nf, 2 Go of RAM, 32 Go Hard Drive SSD, Windows 8 - No CD/DVD drive
I am using a micro SD card of 32 Gbytes that I 've inserted into a USB port adaptor...

Any help would be welcome

thanks

That's not the same as using an actual usb pendrive for the BIOS and that combo may not be bootable at all. Did you succeed in booting anything from that combo on that laptop?
I'd try with an actual usb pendrive from which you know works to boot something.

Also, linuxliveusb.com and isotousb.com are not really recommended for writing images. Usually all tools that are dd-based work pretty well.
Other tools extract the files from the image and copy them to a filesystem on the usb drive and partly add their own bootloader, which often breaks stuff.

.
You can boot the .iso directly from your HDD using Oracle Virtual Box and install to your Mageia Virtual Box.
You don't need to write to an external media first.
In the settings for the Virtual Box [from Win7 on my system here] you have made for Mageia, => Settings, =>Storage, =>click on Host drive 'D:'[ may be different for you ], then, under "attributes", there is a icon of a cd with a very small down arrow, click it and "choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file".
Browse to the downloaded .iso and accept.
You should then be able to start your Mageia Virtual Box, boot the .iso and install into the Virtual Box.
Try the "Livecd or DVD" first as it should have the drivers required for your VirtualBox "graphics card" as default.

thanks a lot for your reply.
I cannot find the selection of "Host drive"... (it seems that Virutal box is instlled within my hard drive C:/).
Then, I am not sure that Mageia is going to be installed on my hard drive. Once the process of installing Mageia through Virtual box has started, the partitions of my disk does appear in some step : Virtual Box has identified some partitions, including that of Windows ; I assume I should select "use the entire disk to install Mageia" (not sure about the exact formulation, sorry). That 's what I did, but the installation stops, with a message saying that my disk is full...However, I thought my hard disk will be entirely formatted ?? How can it be full ?
