Web Page Creation

Postby chippermon » Apr 20th, '15, 05:10

Hello,

I would like to create a series of pages for my web site. I was interested in downloading Joomla but it is not available in the MCC. Is it possible to download and install it or is there another similar program that is supported by Mageia that I can install through MCC?

Thank you

Joomla is a system you would deploy on your web server to provide a framework in which you would build your website.

It has nothing to do with Mageia, unless of course your webserver is running Mageia (which is unlikely).

While you could deploy it on Mageia for use in development, you would first need to have apache and php up and running. Those packages are available in the repositories. You would download Joomla from their site.

Joomla used to be in the repos so I'm not sure why it isn't now.... But don't worry about that.

TBH, you're better off downloading it from their website anyway http://www.joomla.org/.

So you need to first setup a lamp server: http://www.unixmen.com/install-lamp-server-apache-mariadb-php-mageia-4/, oh, look one in the wiki also :) https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Cookbook_LAMP_Stack.

The install joomla from your download: I installed joomla on mageia 2, then through the update to 3 and then 4, something went wrong and my site imploded. It was only a simple inhouse site for my business that I never really finished so it was no great loss. This is why I'd use a download from joomla.org rather than the repos, as updates can do funny things.

Moral of the story? Backup often, and before updates!

I also use joomla for my website,

the reason people prefer not to have it in the OS is that in common with many php /mysql projects

install is drop a tar ball into your virtual host , and untar it, mv config.example to config and make it writable, and run then installer

now remove the installer and make it read only

as this has no dependance on the os other than a running apache env, its easier to take advantage of updates from joomla by repeating the install.

there are many other CMS environments out there , including joomla, and which one you pick is like what music you like, depends much on the look and feel you are looking for, what plugins you want to use and how flexible you want it.

drupal for example is said to be much more flexible and free, but i find it a pain.

joomla however is not so flexible, all sites tend to have a joomla look and feel to them, despite the range of templates that are available.
