I also use joomla for my website,
the reason people prefer not to have it in the OS is that in common with many php /mysql projects
install is drop a tar ball into your virtual host , and untar it, mv config.example to config and make it writable, and run then installer
now remove the installer and make it read only
as this has no dependance on the os other than a running apache env, its easier to take advantage of updates from joomla by repeating the install.
there are many other CMS environments out there , including joomla, and which one you pick is like what music you like, depends much on the look and feel you are looking for, what plugins you want to use and how flexible you want it.
drupal for example is said to be much more flexible and free, but i find it a pain.
joomla however is not so flexible, all sites tend to have a joomla look and feel to them, despite the range of templates that are available.
