Why does kwrite crash when I try to run it as root?

Postby guyjin » Nov 14th, '14, 04:02

recently had the desire to edit my /etc/hosts file. it's write-protected, so I tried to start kwrite as root to edit it. It crashed, giving the following output:
Code: Select all
kwrite(2035)/kdeui (kdelibs): Session bus not found
To circumvent this problem try the following command (with Linux and bash)
export $(dbus-launch)
KCrash: Application 'kwrite' crashing...
KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/drkonqi from kdeinit
sock_file=/root/.kde4/socket-localhost/kdeinit4__0
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
KCrash: Attempting to start /usr/lib64/kde4/libexec/drkonqi directly
drkonqi(2037)/kdeui (kdelibs): Session bus not found
To circumvent this problem try the following command (with Linux and bash)
export $(dbus-launch)

it does not do this when running as a normal user. I ended up having to edit it with vi :o
What's up with that?

How did you become root? It is necessary to use:
Code: Select all
su -
The space and dash after su are essential if you want to use a GUI application as root.

An alternative is to use a more user-friendly editor than vi. Try nano or mcedit for example.
