KWrite now has has black text on black background!

I tried changing the settings but they were already set to black text on white bg. If I do ctl-A I get white text on black bg. Not sure what to do. Any help out there?

Change the colour theme in kwrite. Settings -> Configure Editor -> Fonts & Colors -> Colors.
Works fine here and I've never changed the kwrite settings, so it must be a local issue.

I fixed it by clicking on "use KDE colors". I'm happy now :)

Well, the fix goes away if I open the editor again even with one instance already running. There's no persistance. Maybe the next update will unbreak it.

For one, if you don't report and/or try to find the cause of the problem, it will probably not be fixed magically.
Further, there will probably not be another KDE update like the one that just happened.

If you set it to use KDE colors, did you make sure that your used color theme is not at fault? Did you try to forcibly to set background and foreground to some colors?

After changing the settings KWrite somehow doesn't save default schema in the config file.
Write manually "Schema=Normal" in the [Kate Renderer Defaults] section of the KWrite config file (~/.kde4/share/config/kwriterc) after changing settings and restart KWrite. It should fix this problem.

I've encountered exactly the same problem here (both in my 32-bit Mageia 4 and in my 64-bit Mageia 4) after the KDE update. I'm sure I haven't changed the colors accidentally.

The solution from the relpy above indeed fixes the problem, but if you go to the KWrite editor settings and save changes, then the same problem happens again.

I compare the KWrite Fonts and Colors settings in my Mageia 4 and in my Mageia 5 Cauldron, and it seems that the schema and the KWrite default schema drop-down lists are different, see the screenshots below:

It's empty in Mageia 4.

It's "kwrite - Normal" in Mageia 5 Cauldron.

So if you can reproduce the problem you should report a bug, after searching if it hasn't been reported yet already: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/How_to_report_a_bug_properly

Totally apart from that, I cannot comprehend why anyone would use kwrite if you could use kate instead.

It seems the KWrite can't find the "Normal" schema. Schemas is stored in the kateschemarc file but this file is absent on my PC. I created my own schema in the KWrite editor settings called "Normal", chose to using it and now KWrite works OK for me.
I'm using KWrite for editing simple text files or config files, not for coding and it is quite enough for me.

It looks as though the problem in kwrite is due to a packaging error:

https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14416#c9

Packages that should fix this problem are now available in core/updates_testing. If you wish to test them, execute the following commands:

Code: Select all
urpmi.update "Core Updates Testing"
urpmi --media "Core Updates Testing" kwrite

Please comment in the bug report whether or not they fix the problem for you.

I installed kate package thereafter I fixed it by clicking on "use KDE colors" (via Settings -> Configure Editor -> Fonts & Colors). Problem is finished.

For the kate the issue was never present, only kwrite is affected.
