update broke compiz

Postby jiml8 » Oct 24th, '14, 08:15

The latest update seems to have broken compiz. It included a lot of mesa stuff, and I'm guessing that did it. I am now forced to use kwin, which is an environment that I truly hate. I have not rolled back yet because I have work to do, but kwin is getting in my face badly enough that I see a rollback coming very shortly.

When I try to start compiz from the command line, I don't see anything unusual:

I also don't see anything in the logs that gives a clue. However, I wind up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. I think the keyboard is working, but since I cannot see what is happening I'm not sure. When I try to kill compiz from a console, I have to force it with the -9 option.

Any ideas?

After a couple of days of struggling with kwin, I tried compiz again, and this time it worked. I infer the upgrade led to some minor issue in a configuration someplace, and in the normal course of events at some point that configuration got updated by something in the system - after which, compiz was again happy.

Along the way, I did find that the compositing backend had been changed by the update from OpenGL to Xrender. Changing it back made kwin work a lot better (though still not good enough) and at a later point compiz came back to life.
