[DONE] mgaapplet-update-checker can't open rpmdb

Postby griffin » Feb 16th, '14, 08:25

The mgaapplet-update-checker is failing on the last mirror repository rpmdb it checks. It failed on the 32-bit tainted backports testing rpmdb, so I removed all of the development repositories from my mirror databases.

However, it continued to report this error in syslog:

A popup message said, "Service configuration problem. Please check logs and send mail to support@mageiaonline.com." However, email sent to that address is returned undeliverable.

Setting up the mirror repositories worked without reporting any errors.

Please advise.

Well, I see nothing about rpm DB. This is only about the urpmi repositories, and may be an issue with the mirror you're currently using.
Can you please show the output of
Code: Select all
urpmq --dump

But for the popup message and the issue with the mail adress, can you please file a bugreport against mgaonline?
It shouldn't be done via manually finding logs and sending mail, it should be handled via e.g. drakbug.

The output of urpmq --dump is unremarkable:

It might be the mirror, as you said. However, the fact that it failed twice on the last repository it checked, and continues to fail, is suspicious. I'll file a bug report, and link to this forum thread, since I've related all I know.

Please don't! There's nothing we can do if a mirror is not completely synced. You should find out which mirror you're using
via e.g.
Code: Select all
grep url /var/cache/urpmi/mirrors.cache | head -5
and notifiy the mirror administrator about this.

Apart from that, I can only recommend to remove all repositories, and readd them from a specific mirror.
Code: Select all
urpmi.removemedia -a
urpmi.addmedia --distrib --wget 'ftp://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/Mageia/distrib/4/$ARCH'
urpmi.update --no-ignore "Tainted Release" && urpmi.update --no-ignore "Tainted Updates" && urpmi.update --no-ignore "Nonfree Release" && urpmi.update --no-ignore "Nonfree Updates" && urpmi.update -a

Try a mirror near your until you find a fast and reliable one: http://mirrors.mageia.org/

Okay. How to do that was going to be my next question. Thank you.

So did the above procedure work for you? Does the initially reported issue still occur?

doktor5000 wrote:So did the above procedure work for you? Does the initially reported issue still occur?

Yes, I was able to remove the mirror media and readd them from another mirror, though I used drakrpm-editmedia instead of urpmi.update to select the nonfree and tainted release and update media, then drakrpm-update to update the system.

There happened to be updates pending, and drakrpm-update applied them. I'm certain that mgaapplet-update-checker would have found those, but I ran drakrpm-update before it had a chance. (When mgaapplet-update-checker finds that there are updates available, it pops up a message from its taskbar icon. Clicking on the update button in that popup message doesn't work, but clicking on the red taskbar icon to launch drakrpm-update works.)

However, when mgaapplet-update-checker ran once more to update the inactive media repositories it failed again, even though I'd removed the mirror media and readded it from another mirror at mirrors.kernel.org, which I have found to be consistently reliable. The mgaapplet-update-checker is failing on a clean install of Mageia 4, whereas it works fine on another Mageia 4 system that was upgraded from Mageia 3. I don't know what mirror the upgraded Mageia 4 system uses, but it works.

I've posted the syslog and console output as an attachment. At this point I don't know whether this is a bug or just an annoyance.

It could be related to the recent enabling of backports. Best report it as a bug.
Apart from that, mgaapplet runs fine here on several mga4 installations, so could be a mirror issue. Although mirror.kernel.org syncs directly from rsync.mageia.org.
I'm currently using ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de which syncs from distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr which also syncs from rsync.mageia.org.
So I should also have the issue whereas I cannot reproduce.

I have updated the bug report to reflect that this problem likely was caused by doing a hard disk install *and* selecting mirror repositories.

I keep getting exactly this problem but as a newcomer don't think I can cope with all the tech stuff outlined above to try to fix it...should I just ignore this or is there an easy way to fix the problem please? Hopefully this post will not cause an allergic reaction. I am willing to try to learn( & have Piriton should you need it)

What is "exactly this problem"? And no it should not be ignored, as that would mean your package database is broken and you cannot do software management or updates,

You should still be able to remove all your currently configured software repositories and add a complete new set, check http://doc.mageia.org/mcc/4/en/content/ ... media.html or https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Software_man ... ia_sources for more information

Thankyou for your time & speedy reply... Problem is exactly as other user above described. Okay so I checked the links & will be following the instructions. (All was going well until I downloaded extra stuff to try to play DVDs (which didn't work anyway))... My mind is being distracted by the horrid thought of cooked kittens but I will do my best. Thanks again

I removed everything in the list. (even used the Konsole). However in the instruction manual it shows FTP all down the list. Mine shows Mirror list.So I'm a bit stuck as to what to re-enable (no default button). In the meantime stuff came flooding in which I took to be updates... ps.I keep losing my shutdown & restart buttons and..minimising stuff makes it disappear (reappears again in what looks like a terminal screen on logout). Perhaps I need to consider 1)Defeat 2)Reinstall 3) Volunteering to break things for you as per the request in the forums. ...I dunno... Advice would be appreciated but please do not tell me to go back to Ubuntu;I really like Mageia. It has a feminine arty touch that all the other distros lack. Thanks again.

Sorry I cannot follow your train of thought and description there. If you consider defeat or reinstallation before you really started using something, that's not the best sign.

Please do the following as root

Code: Select all
urpmi.removemedia -a
drakrpm-edit-media

-> File -> Add a specific media mirror -> choose one of the FTP mirrors near your location.

Or do it from the command-line:
Code: Select all
urpmi.addmedia --distrib --wget 'ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/mageia/distrib/$RELEASE/$ARCH'
urpmi.update --no-ignore "Tainted Release" && urpmi.update --no-ignore "Tainted Updates" && urpmi.update --no-ignore "Nonfree Release" && urpmi.update --no-ignore "Nonfree Updates" && urpmi.update -a

You are very kind. & I could not agree more re the defeat or reinstall!. Thanks. If the above means I am up to date I am a happy bunny. (the widget on the task bar is telling me there are 20 + updates but they do not seem to install. But I'll put that down to my impatience for now). Not many people can ever follow my train of thought but you seem to be doing better than most. Thanks again.

As you didn't post what command you actually ran, can only assume. If you went for the commandline way, then the last command only updated your repositories, but no packages, The updates should install via the update applet, but they will not install automatically, if that's what you think. So just waiting will not get the updates installed.

I did that it says "command not found" .But I did use help sources and managed with konsole to check updates done. The system is working great as a "netbook". But I have the same problem now as on any other system. ie Loss of system control as a user. If this problem was only on this old PC I'd put it down to lack of memory/age of computer. In the end whether Mac, Windows, Linux..brand new computer or 10 years old..it always comes down to security problems..(or router or network problems). Since I dont keep anything personal on the computer and have the speed of light to zip around the internet I'm not going to argue much about any of this but perhaps you could cast your eye below. and suggest what I might need to try to change.

As a general hint and golden rule: Please only one problem per thread ;)
You already took over an existing thread, so please for that issue start a new one. I don't know why you mention loss of system control, though ...

General hint: If you don't feel comfortable reviewing the results of this security check on your own, then best uninstall msec so it won't bother you again - it's that simple.
