[SOLVED] How to tactually talk on an IRC channel?

Postby tarazed » Aug 28th, '14, 22:10

I am in the embarrassing position of not being able to join the conversation at the QA meetings which normally take place on a Thursday. I have absolutely no experience of IRC and have chosen to use irssi. The configuration is set up to connect to the server and join the mageia_qa channel. That side works fine, automatic login and identification; I can see who is at the meeting, including my own nickname, and read whatever is being said but cannot talk to anybody. I imagine the /msg command would work but I gather that that is used to address one person. The config file contains
Code: Select all
autojoin = "yes"
but when I type in plain text, without a preceding slash it is returned as an invalid command. Can anybody here give advice on this very basic point? All the online help assumes that you know how IRC works.

Maybe you should try a graphic IRC client. There are several which seems to be more self-explaining than irssi (I just checked it and could not use it, although I know how to use IRC - a least the basics). If you are using KDE I would recommend Konversion. Another well-known IRC is xchat, but I don't know it well. If you are using Gnome there should be an "build-in" IRC client as well, but this someone else needs to tell you...

In the IRC client you should be able to set up a connection to the freenode server (chat.freenode.net) - at Konversion just press F2 and select 'new'. in the lower part you can enter the mageia-qa channel so that you will connect automatically each time Konversation starts. Otherwise you can simply join the channel by typing '/join #mageia-qa'. But as I said in the most graphical IRC clients there should be also some menus to join channels...

here is a list of different IRC clients: http://www.linuxlinks.com/article/20090 ... 7/IRC.html

Please try it out...

Thanks for the info. Using Mate (GNOME 2). I am a bit short of time and having gone to the trouble of setting up the configuration would like to persevere with irssi. I am convinced that I have missed something simple being the dumbass that I am. I am beginning to suspect that I have to use /join or whatever the command is even though I am listed as being already present. Will at least check the documentation you have pointed to. Thanks.

At last. autojoin does not seem to have any effect. /join #channelname IS the essential command.
