Can you load a module without the source?

Postby drthrd » Jul 7th, '11, 03:20

I posted this topic. I need AGPGART as a module. My config file looks like this

Code: Select all
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_ALI=y
CONFIG_AGP_ATI=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA=y
CONFIG_AGP_SIS=y
CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS=y
CONFIG_AGP_VIA=y

From my looking around and testing I need to install the modules. Can you change it so that it will use the module without compiling and installing a new kernel?

From what I remember there are two AGPGART modules. One provided by the fglrx driver itself and one provided by the kernel.
Normally the internal one (from fglrx driver) is used. If you want to use the one from the kernel there is one option to be added to xorg.conf, something like (sorry, but I don't remember exactly): "UseInternalAgpGart" "No".
(don't hurry to put that option in xorg.conf, it may be wrong formulated.)
Also the module agpgart has to be added to /etc/modules or? /etc/modules.preload.

Maybe you or someone else could make something of this.
I'll try to find some more info.

Edit: Here's something from Gentoo's wiki:
