rutorrent, total newbie needs help!

Postby glowingghoul » Apr 7th, '14, 00:04

Hi,

While I have decades of IT experience, linux is completely new for me.

After deciding on mageia, I've succesfully installed the OS on a bare metal system, and managed to install the rtorremt, rutorrent, and rutorrent plugins packages.

I have no idea what to do next.

If I understand the docs, I think I need to enable rpc, in the plugins.ini file with:
[rpc]
enabled = yes

However, I can't edit it. I tried to change permissions to allow me to modify it, but when I add permissions for my username they don't "stick".

EDIT: OK, figured out how to get root access and edited the file, still doesn't work

I don't even know for sure if that's all I need to do to get rutorrent functioning.

While I intend to explore linux (I've literally had this system up for a couple of hours only), I need to get rutorrent up and running asap.

Would someone be kind enough to give me step by step instructions on getting this running?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

hi

this is not a program i have used before but if you installed the files via the software installer tab of Mageia Control Centre you should be good to go.
you could try:

open a konsole
at the prompt type " rtorrent " and enter key.

are there any errors ?

if above doesnt work try " su "
at the prompt enter your password
then at the prompt type " rtorrent " then enter key

any errors?

Just for clarification, I don't think it's a good idea to run a torrent client with root permissions.
