recommendation for silent laptop?

Postby vincentm77 » Mar 12th, '14, 11:40

Hi everyone,

I need to buy a new laptop... what I m looking for is a laptop I would use as a desktop replacement, no touch screen, a 15.6'' display should be enough, DVD drive would be good, though I could do without it...

Important:I wish the laptop energy management features to work well under Mageia (unlike my Toshiba, which fan is always on)
Best regards !

Hi Vincent,

well that's not enough for a recommendation. Any hints on the expected price range?

For the Toshiba lpatop, maybe you only need to add
Code: Select all
acpi_osi="Linux"
like with my parents Satellite L350.
That's pretty common. Also have a look at https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Mageia_3_Err ... regression which works similar.

Thank You very much Doktor for your reply.

I expect to spend between 500 and 1000€ on the new laptop (I live in Germany).
I don t need a touch screen... and portability (battery and weight) is not so important to me. Also, I am not a gamer.

If I get it right, "acpi_osi="Linux" " may need to be added as a parameter to Grub, right ?

Thanks !
