[Solved] Boot Problems after Update Mageia 3

Postby goosecoffee » Jan 30th, '14, 03:52

Mageia 3 is installed on system with Windows 7 on one drive, and Mageia and Kubuntu on a different drive . It was working fine.

Had tested it along with other distros, even ran the update. Took off all the distros and started over with just Kubuntu first, then Mageia installed last. The Linux (s) are on separate drive. After installing Mageia, loading in various software from the software center, put in Thunderbird for mail, brought everything over mail calendars, data files etc. Everything was working great.

Then ran Update, not upgrade, just update.

Now cannot get Mageia to boot. I tried all the other server options on the second boot page. It has to do with the nvidia driver. I tried to copy the mageia partitions to a different drive using gparted so I could re-install, but cannot access .thunderbird folder to try to copy it. So, am afraid to reinstall as I might loose all my mail, which I desperately need. I have read through the forum here for what I can find that has to do with update and the nvidia problem. But, I don't find explanations simple enough to figure out what to do. I know there must be a way to get his moving in the right direction.

One odd thing also, which I did fix, was that after the upgrade it discarded the ubuntu boot option out of Grub2, but left the windows entries.

I need to fix this without installing again; or be able to get my data files and thunderbird files off in a safe place before reinstall. How do I do this? I am new here, to Linux, so can you please keep it really simple and step by step? Please?
Thank you very much,

Sharen

I should add more information here. The system is an IBM IntelliStation Z Pro. Raid is disabled. 4 drives plus one external. Wireless Cisco AE1000, plus can network cable. It appears when trying to boot, it goes by terribly fast, but I think I catch it saying, after Nvidia is on kernel, the next screen comes up something corrupt with video. It says it on all three types of server boot attempts. After that screen then quickly goes reboot screen.

If you can tell me what kind of logs you want, how to get them saved, and get them uploaded here, I would be very happy to do so.

Thank you for your time,
Sharen

Oh my goodness! Do you know how awesome Mageia is, and you guys/ladies that put this together!?

On a hunch, I put in the install DVD disk, not the live only DVD. Rebooted. Right there are all the tools to fix this problem. :o
I had cloned two partitions with clonezilla. Went into the tools there, and tried some of the commands I saw on other posts, but nothing worked. I don't have the expertise to know what commands to use, or what to do with the tools.

So on hunch I ran the install DVD, and there was an upgrade option. I ran the upgrade, it fixed the problem (s), but had an issue with users temp????? when I booted. So, did a full install on the same partitions as original, but unchecked the format option(s).
All done in a few minutes. And everything that was installed..... is still there! :?: How did that happen!

I know you all are working very hard to fix the bug with the nvidia problem. I wish I had the expertise to give you all the logs and errors that some are doing to help. I am learning, but just not there yet. But, for anyone just wanting to get going again, this worked for me. I don't know if it would work for anyone else. I have heard/read all kinds of warnings about upgrade installs, and re-installs and backing everything up.

You did an awesome job with that full install iso. Incredible!

Thank you Thank you Thank you! :D :D :D
