[SOLVED] problem after update

Postby rejean » Nov 19th, '13, 00:47

Hi all!
This afternoon I was told there were 2 updates available for my Mageia 3. One was "flash player" and I cannot remember the other. I am quite sure that I had close firefox before I did the update but maybe I did not. Anyway a few hours later I was in FF and started getting problems seeing videos in Facebook. I decided to reboot and I got this message upon rebooting;

Welcome to emergency mode! After logging in, type "systemctl -b" to view system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" to try again to boot into default mode.
Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue):

Doing ""journalctl -b" after giving my password gave me several pages ( or screen fulls ) with one log in red;
fsck failed with error code 4

Doing "systemctl default" gave me;
systemd-fsck[1360]:/dev/sdb13 contains a file system with errors, check forced
Failed to issue method call:Transaction is destructive.

and doing "systemctl reboot" rebooted but with the same original message.

What should I do?

I tried booting in failsafe mode and got the following messages near the end;
[Failed] Failed to start File System Check on /dev/disk/by-uu...3-e08a816800fb.
...
[Depend]Dependency failed for /home
[Depend]Dependency failed for LocalFile Systems.

I mounted the partition in another distro (Siduction) and everything is there;

Did you try a manual fsck on the partition under Mageia?

It worked! I was quite worried when I started the topic wondering why it happened after a small update ( nothing to do with the kernel) then I did more reading about fsck and had enough confidence to try it this afternoon and it worked. I am replying from Mandriva as myself (not root) and everything seems to be fine. Thanks doktor5000!

There's probably no relation to the updates. How long has your computer been running before the update, how old is the harddrive and when did you check it with diagnostic tools last time?

The computer is no more than a year old with a new mobo and a new cpu. The hard drive is at the most 2 years old. I suspect the problem was created by the fact that I have done a lot of .iso files and burning lately. I am trying to install Linux on my wife's computer which right now as Win XP only. None of the distros that I think has the capacity to be installed on an old 1 Ghz machine with only 640 Mbbyte memory. Anyway my machine is working again in Mandriva.

Depending on what you want to run on that box you can use Mageia just fine on that box, too. May need some tweaking, but should definitely be usable.
